    Abstract: This volume focuses on the major issues and debates in the study of Jews and Judaism in late antiquity (3rd to 7th c. C.E.), providing cutting-edge surveys of the state of scholarship, main topics and research questions, methodological approaches, and avenues for future research. Based on both Jewish and non-Jewish, literary and material sources, this volume takes an interdisciplinary approach involving historians of ancient Judaism, scholars of rabbinic literature, archaeologists, epigraphers, art historians, and Byzantinists. Developments within Jewish society and culture are viewed within the respective regional, political, cultural, and socio-economic contexts in which they took place. Special focus is given to the impact of the Christianization of the Roman Empire on Jews, from administrative, legal, social, and cultural points of view. The contributors examine how the confrontation with Christianity changed Jewish practices, perceptions and organizational structures, such as, for example, the emergence of local Jewish communities around synagogues as central religious spaces. Special chapters are devoted to the eastern and western Jewish Diaspora in Late Antiquity, especially Sasanian Persia but also Roman Italy, Egypt, Syria and Arabia, North Africa, and Asia Minor, to provide a comprehensive assessment of the situation and life experiences of Jews and Judaism during this period.     Abstract: "Although recently more studies have been devoted to the representations of biblical heroines in modern European art, less is known about the contribution to the portrayals of biblical women by modern Jewish artists. This monograph explores why and how heroines of the Scripture: Judith, Esther and the Shulamite received a particular meaning for acculturated Jewish artists originating from the Polish lands in the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century. It convincingly proves that artworks by Maurycy Gottlieb, Wilhem Wachtel, Ephraim Moses Lilien, Maurycy Minkowski, Samuel Hirszenberg and Boris Schatz significantly differed from renderings of contemporary non-Jewish artists, adopting a "Jewish perspective", creating complex and psychological portrayals of the heroines inspired by Jewish literature and as well as by historical and cultural phenomena of Jewish revival and the cultural Zionism movement"--

Analyzing Israel's national elections from 2019 to 2021, this book argues the four elections became, to a large extent, a referendum on Benjamin Netanyahu, the incumbent prime minister and head of the Likud party, facing investigations, a hearing, and indictment on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. Thus, the first part of the book is dedicated to political personalization and to Netanyahu himself. The second part of the volume covers the traditional actors in parliamentary elections: voters, parties, and the mass media. The book relies on empirical analysis, including extensive use of the Israel National Election Studies data; on theoretical rigor; and on the contextualization of the elections from comparative and long-term perspectives.     Abstract: Im Leben Jakob Wassermanns (1873–1934) ist der 1908 erschienene Roman ›Caspar Hauser oder Die Trägheit des Herzens‹ ein Schlüsselwerk. Mit keinem anderen Stoff hat er sich so eingehend und anhaltend beschäftigt, weit über die Vollendung des Romans hinaus. Im »heimatlichen Mythos« des geheimnisvollen Außenseiters, dem Unverständnis und Misstrauen entgegenschlägt und der schließlich eines gewaltsamen Todes stirbt, fand der unter dem Antisemitismus seiner Umwelt leidende deutsche Jude ein Bild der eigenen Existenz. Und er war fest überzeugt davon, dass Kaspar Hauser tatsächlich der badische Erbprinz war. All dies belegen eindrücklich die hier versammelten Studien und Selbstzeugnisse sowie der Briefwechsel mit Hermann Pies (1888–1983), der durch Wassermanns Roman zu seinen bahnbrechenden Kaspar-Hauser-Forschungen angeregt wurde. Als erschütterndes Zeitbild und Selbstzeugnis ist auch "Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude" (1921) unvermindert relevant.     Abstract: Fritz Borinski (1903–1988) war führender Vertreter einer Bildung zur Demokratie sowie Wegbereiter und Schrittmacher für die Wissenschaft von der Erwachsenenbildung. Wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft und als Sozialdemokrat seiner Arbeitsmöglichkeiten in Deutschland durch den Nationalsozialismus beraubt, gelang ihm 1934 die Emigration nach London, von wo er 1947 nach Deutschland zurückkehrte. In seiner Praxis vermochte er es immer wieder, Menschen in Krisensituationen zu neuer Orientierung zu verhelfen (z.B. deutschen Kriegsgefangenen in England). Die Stationen seines Lebens zeigen Wegmarken der politischen Geschichte und bieten Einblick in Institutionen in kritischer Zeit (u.a.     Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: Konrad Merz, 1908 als Kurt Lehmann in Berlin geboren, ist ein bisher kaum beachteter Exilschriftsteller jüdischer Herkunft. Nach seiner Flucht ins niederländische Exil erreicht er dort 1936 mit dem Roman Ein Mensch fällt aus Deutschland einen ersten Erfolg, den er aber unter der nationalsozialistischen Besatzung nicht fortführen kann. Die Jahre 1940 bis 1945 überlebt er versteckt. Erst ab 1972 tritt Merz – inzwischen hat er sich eine physiotherapeutische Karriere in den Niederlanden aufgebaut – mit grotesken Kurzgeschichten ›aus der Masseurspraxis‹ wieder literarisch in Erscheinung. Das autofiktional angelegte Nachkriegswerk ist dabei maßgeblich durch die Berufswahl geprägt: In einer ›Poetik der Körperlichkeit‹ fungiert der Körper als ›Übersetzungsinstrument‹ und Metapher der Erinnerung an psychische Traumatisierungen – zumeist begründet in den Erfahrungen des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Untersucht und literaturhistorisch eingeordnet werden die literarischen Strategien der grotesken Gestaltung von Körperlichkeit in Merz’ Œuvre. Zugleich wird die poetologische Bedeutung der dem Werk immanenten Parallelführung von Physiotherapie und Kunst – auch unter Rückgriff auf unveröffentlichte Texte und Nachlassdokumente – aufgeschlüsselt. Sucht Merz’ Literatur, geprägt von der Frage nach der Möglichkeit einer ›Literatur nach 1945‹, den adäquaten Umgang mit dem Erlebten, so will die vorliegende Publikation einen Beitrag leisten, den zu wenig gewürdigten Schriftsteller dem Publikum und der Kritik in Erinnerung zu rufen.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts.

    Abstract: Der 1873 im fränkischen Fürth geborene Wassermann war in einem von Armut und Lieblosigkeit geprägten kleinbürgerlichen Elternhaus aufgewachsen. Der acht Jahre jüngere Wiener Zweig hingegen stammte aus einer wohlhabenden, großbürgerlichen Familie. Ungeachtet der biographischen Unterschiede entwickelte sich eine beständige Bekanntschaft zwischen den beiden, die bis kurz vor Wassermanns Tod dauerte. Sie beruhte auf Wertschätzung und Respekt für den jeweils Anderen und sein literarisches Werk sowie dem Wissen, dass sie als Juden gemeinsame Erfahrungen teilten. Die Lebensbekanntschaft und der unveröffentlichte Briefwechsel zwischen Wassermann und Zweig sind bisher noch weitgehend unbeachtet geblieben. Die nähere Beleuchtung der kollegial-freundschaftlichen Verbindung veranschaulicht jedoch das Schicksal zweier jüdischer Schriftsteller, die zwischen zwei Weltkriegen auf ungleichen Wegen zu den bekanntesten Vertretern der deutschen Literatur ihrer Zeit wurden. Indem ihre Leben gegensätzlich waren und sich zugleich einander in manchen Aspekten ergänzten, kann die Betrachtung der Lebensbekanntschaft einen Beitrag dazu leisten, die Geschichte dieser prägenden Generation jüdischer Autoren um einen wenig erforschten Aspekt zu vervollständigen.

    Abstract: The Hellenistic period was a pivotal moment in the history of the Jewish priesthood. The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea. The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans. Throughout this book, Robert Jones analyzes how Israel’s priestly institutions are represented in these writings, and he demonstrates that they are essential for understanding the Jewish priesthood at this crucial stage in its history

    Abstract: "Agunot (Agunah, sing., meaning anchored in Hebrew) is a Jewish term describing women who cannot remarry because their husband has disappeared. According to Jewish law (Halacha) a woman can get out of the marriage only if the husband releases her by granting a divorce writ (Get), if he dies, or if his whereabouts is not known. Women whose husbands cannot be located, and who have not been granted a Get, are considered Agunot. The Agunah phenomenon was of major concern in East European Jewry and much referred to in Hebrew and Yiddish media and fiction. Most nineteenth-century Agunot cases came from Eastern Europe, where most Jews resided (twentieth-century Agunot were primarily in North America, and will be the subject of a forthcoming book). Seven variations of Agunot have been identified: Deserted wives; women who refused to receive, or were not granted, a Get; widowed women whose brothers-in-law refused to grant them permission to marry someone else (Halitza); women whose husbands remains were not found; improperly or incorrectly written Gets; women whose husbands became mentally ill and were not competent to grant a Get; women refused a Get by husbands who had converted to Christianity or Islam. The book explores the reasons for desertion and the plight of the left-alone wife. Key is the change from a legal issue to a social one, with changing attitudes to philanthropy and public opinion at the fore of explanation. A statistical database of circa 5000 identified Agunot is to be published simultaneously in a separate companion volume." -- publisher

    Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. Scientific theology in this sense is always exchange, reflection, encounter, and positioning as well as a form of transcendence. In thirteen contributions, the international authors shed light on the phenomenon of theology as an independent scientific discipline from different disciplinary, but also epistemological and religious points of view, which always oscillates between tradition, its own reflexivity and its relation to the world. The common characteristic feature is the border crossing along the intangible.     Abstract: Theologie ist die Wissenschaft vom Unbegreifbaren. Als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin verstanden bietet sie facettenreiche Perspektiven, die nicht nur einen interdisziplinären, sondern zugleich epistemologischen Balanceakt erfordern.     Abstract: Im Mittelpunkt des Buchs steht das autobiographische Manuskript, das von dem jüdischen Arzt Heinz Lichtenstein (1904–1990) unter dem Pseudonym Martin Andermann für ein ‚wissenschaftliches Preisausschreiben‘ der Harvard University im Jahr 1939 erstellt wurde. Dem Aufruf „An alle, die Deutschland vor und seit Hitler gut kennen“ folgend, berichtet Lichtenstein über sein Aufwachsen in Königsberg – unter dem Einfluss von Immanuel Kant –, über seine Studienzeit, die ihn zu einem begeisterten Anhänger von Martin Heidegger werden ließ, sowie – ab 1933 – über seine Tätigkeit als Arzt und die damit verbundenen Einschränkungen und Verfolgungen. Nach seiner Emigration in die USA wurde Lichtenstein zu einem renommierten Psychoanalytiker und Autor. Der zweite Teil des Buchs enthält Beiträge von Thomas Aichhorn, Detlef Garz, Norman Holland, Erwin Lichtenstein und Nicole Welter zu seiner Biographie und seinem weiteren wissenschaftlichen Werk.
    Abstract: The book focuses on the autobiographical manuscript written by the Jewish physician Heinz Lichtenstein (1904–1990) under the pseudonym Martin Andermann for the Harvard University 'prize competition' in 1939. Answering the call "To all who knew Germany well before and since Hitler," Lichtenstein recounts his growing up in Königsberg – under the influence of Immanuel Kant – his student days, which made him a follower of Martin Heidegger, as well as his work as a doctor and the restrictions and persecutions associated with it, which led to his emigration to the USA. In the U.S., Lichtenstein became a renowned psychoanalyst and author. The second part of the book is devoted to his further scientific work.

After the Nazis marched into Hungary in 1944, five-year old Susan learned to call herself by a Christian name, hiding with false papers in Budapest with her parents.     Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert war geprägt von Völkermorden. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung im deutschsprachigen Raum beschränkte sich dabei lange Zeit auf den nationalsozialistischen Judenmord. Anknüpfend an Ansätze der vergleichenden Genozidforschung und der literarischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah zeigt Gerald Manstetten, dass mittlerweile auch andere Genozide in den literarischen Fokus genommen werden. Am Beispiel von neun deutschsprachigen Werken weist er diese Entwicklung ebenso nach wie den noch immer starken Einfluss der Shoah auf das Schreiben über Genozide in deutscher Sprache.

    Abstract: This book examines the process of re-establishment of Jewish communities in two post-war European cities – in Wrocław which passed after 1945 from Germany to Poland, and in L’viv which passed from Poland to the Soviet Union. These processes were thus overseen by two different Communist regimes. The book compares similarities and differences in the policies of the two countries. The attempt to re-establish full-blown Jewish life failed, in both cases. This study explains why the efforts to create communities that were self-identified as Jewish and loyal to the Communist state did not succeed. After reviewing the prewar history and wartime destruction of Jews in German Breslau and Polish Lwów, the book explores the efforts of the postwar regimes, supported by Jews who had survived the Holocaust, to reconstitute Jewish life. It examines the history of the nascent communities up to 1968 in Wrocław and up to the 1970s in L’viv. The comparison is made in relation to five inter-related contexts. These contexts are the official policies towards Jews of the governments of the Polish People’s Republic and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, how these central policies were implemented at the local level, the particular national frameworks of Jewish life in communist Poland and Soviet Ukraine, the effects of popular and official antisemitism on postwar Jewish communities in Wrocław and L’viv, and the repercussions of the economic and social modernization of the Communist regimes for local Jewish communities.

    Abstract: Schon ein kurzer Blick auf Leben und Werk von Grete Ring (1887–1952) verdeutlicht ihre bemerkenswerten Leistungen als Kunsthistorikerin und Kunsthändlerin. Als eine der ersten Frauen, die Kunstgeschichte studierten, promovierte sie bei Heinrich Wölfflin. Schon Anfang der 1920er Jahre arbeitete sie als Kunsthändlerin im renommierten Kunstsalon Cassirer in Berlin, daraufhin sogar als Geschäftspartnerin. Über die Jahre hinweg trug Ring eine beeindruckende Sammlung französischer und deutscher Zeichnungen zusammen und publizierte in Fachzeitschriften in ganz Europa. Ihre Entdeckung der berüchtigten Wacker’schen Van-Gogh-Fälschungen war 1928 eine Sensation. Ein entscheidender Wendepunkt in ihrem Leben war die Flucht aus Deutschland im Jahr 1938 und die anschließende Eröffnung einer Filiale der Firma Cassirer in London. Ihre Monografie über französische Malerei im 15. Jahrhundert blieb über Jahrzehnte ein Standardwerk für dieses Gebiet. Trotz dieser beeindrucken­den Karriere geriet Grete Ring in Vergessenheit. In der Publikation werden ihr Leben genauer in Augenschein genommen und ihre herausragende Stellung im Kunsthandel der Weimarer Republik hervorgehoben.

A critical edition and an extensive introduction was published by Ilana Sasson as vol. 1 (KTS 8) in 2016. Dr. Sasson worked for many years on an English translation of the work and, before her untimely death in 2017, passed her unfinished manuscript to the series editors. The translation was then completed, edited, and prepared for publication by Dr. Wechsler. Yefet’s commentary on Proverbs is a masterpiece of literary and rational-contextual analysis of one of the most difficult and important books of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. His work is an invaluable link in the history of interpretation of the book of Proverbs

    Abstract: Das Ezechielbuch verarbeitet die Katastrophe des Babylonischen Exils auf einzigartige Weise: Es zieht Symbolik von Übergangsriten (rites de passage) heran, um das Exil als notwendige Phase eines Prozesses darzustellen, der Israel und die Lesenden verändert. Über das ganze Ezechielbuch hinweg werden Räume und Bewegungen beschrieben. Sie lassen sich analog zu Symbolen in Übergangsritualen verstehen, wie sie von A. van Gennep und V. W. Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien

    Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt das Schicksal polnischer Juden im besetzten Deutschland der Jahre 1945–1948. Untersucht wird vor allem ihr Verhältnis zu den einheimischen Deutschen, den Besatzungsmächten, den polnischen DPs sowie den Vertretern von Hilfsorganisationen in den DP-Lagern. Es ergibt sich das Bild einer Gemeinschaft, die ihre Wurzeln in der jüdischen Bevölkerung im Polen der Vorkriegszeit hat. Zugleich verkörpern diese Menschen eine neue Identität: die der Scher’it Hapleitah – der Überlebenden der Shoah. Aus den „polnischen Juden“ wurden in den Nachkriegsjahren Juden aus Polen, und schließlich schlichtweg Juden, die ihr Leben außerhalb ihres Herkunftslandes aufbauen wollten. Die Erfahrung der Shoah und der Glaube an eine Zukunft in Palästina hielten diese Gemeinschaft zusammen.
    Abstract: This book discusses the fate of Polish Jews in postwar Germany 1945–1948, focusing primarily on their relations with their surroundings: local German population, the occupying administration, Polish DPs, and representatives of the aid agencies in the DP camps. The book looks at a community, which to a large degree remained a continuation of the Jewish community in Poland. Its members were still part of the pre-war and wartime networks, while becoming a new entity: a group creating a new identity, that of Sh'erit ha-Pletah: the survivors of the Holocaust. During the years they spent in Germany Polish Jews became Jews from Poland and finally simply Jews building their lives outside their country of origin. This community was unified by the shared experience of the Holocaust and the belief in the future in Palestine.
    Abstract: Monografia opisuje los polskich Żydów w powojennych Niemczech w latach 1945–1948, koncentrując się przede wszystkim na ich relacji z otoczeniem: miejscową społecznością niemiecką, administracją i żołnierzami wojsk okupacyjnych, polskimi dipisami i przedstawicielami zarządzających obozami organizacji pomocowych. Z badań przedstawionych w książce wyłania się obraz społeczności, która była kontynuacją przedwojennej żydowskiej społeczności w Polsce, ale jednocześnie stawała się czymś zupełnie nowym – grupą budującą nową tożsamość, tożsamość Szerit hapleta – ocalałych z Zagłady. W czasie kilkuletniego pobytu w Niemczech polscy Żydzi stali się Żydami z Polski i wreszcie po prostu Żydami, budującymi życie poza krajem urodzenia. Spoiwem tej społeczności było doświadczenie Zagłady i wiara w przyszłość narodu w Palestynie.
