Abstract:
Over fifty years after the publication of "The Last of the Just", its author André Schwarz-Bart is being read again. Despite the criticism that the novel has provoked since its first publication in 1959, "The Last of the Just" has proven to be a timeless literary work. Argues that Schwarz-Bart's novels are timeless due to their universalism. Concealed at the heart of "The Last of the Just", running alongside the mystery of Jewish suffering, is a story on how modern racist violence produces a particular kind of misery - a uniquely oppressive, implacable, physical, and historical suffering that isolates its victims, whether individually or as a group.
