Abstract:
King João III (1502-1557) of Portugal, who reigned between 1521-57, abstained for a short time from persecuting the Conversos of his kingdom, but in 1524 he began to control Converso activities. He commissioned a New Christian, Enrique Nuñez (who between 1499-1509 worked for the Inquisition of Córdoba), to spy on Portuguese Conversos in order to obtain proof of their practicing Judaism in secret. Nuñez provided the king with a list of Conversos who confessed to him confidentially their adherence to Judaism. The Conversos discovered this treason and killed Nuñez, but the murderers were soon discovered and executed. Nuñez was regarded as a martyr and later beatified. This event was used, among others, to convince Pope Clement VII to establish the Inquisition in Portugal. The first auto da fe in Lisbon took place in 1536.
