Abstract: At the intersection of Jewish studies and linguistic research, the essays assembled in this book approach the topic of the languages of Sephardic Jews from different perspectives, spanning chronologically from the Middle Ages to the present day. Drawing on diverse sources - from medical glossaries to inquisition archives, from rabbinic 'responsa' to recordings of today's speakers - the scholars collaborating on this project have endeavoured to reconstruct fragments of a complex and elusive linguistic reality, which over the centuries has been shaped by the historical experience of its speakers. An innovative collection of rigorously conducted synchronic and diachronic studies that contributes to expanding our knowledge and opening new perspectives on crucial issues, such as the effects of contact on the linguistic structures, the possibility of a norm for polycentric languages, the relationship between the lexicon of a language and the vitality of its speech community

Abstract: Franz Oppenheimer (1864-1943) was a prominent German sociologist, economist and Zionist activist. As a co-founder of academic sociology in Germany, Oppenheimer vehemently opposed the influence of antisemitism on the nascent field. As an expert on communal agricultural settlement, Oppenheimer co-edited the scientific Zionist journal Altneuland (1904-1906), which became a platform for a distinct Jewish participation within the racial and colonial discourses of Imperial Germany. By positioning Zionist aspirations within a German colonial narrative, Altneuland presented Zionism as an extension, instead of a rejection, of German patriotism. By doing so, the journal’s contributors hoped to recruit new supporters and model Zionism as a source of secular Jewish identity for German Jewry. While imagining future relationships between Jews, Arabs, and German settlers in Palestine, Oppenheimer and his contemporaries also reimagined the place of Jews among European nations.

Abstract: A pioneering discussion of the changing attitudes of the Chilean right toward Jewish immigrants and Israel, with a particular emphasis on the 1930s, the failed struggle to extradite war criminal Walter Rauff and the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet
Abstract: This is the first book in English to discuss the changing attitudes of the Chilean Right toward Jewish immigrants and the State of Israel from the 1930s onwards. Jewish Chileans have ascended rapidly from the status of undesirable immigrants to middle and upper-middle class, facing less obstacles than their Argentine coreligionists. Particular emphasis is given to the failed struggle to extradite war criminal Walther Rauff and to the years of the military dictatorship headed by General Augusto Pinochet. By the 1970s, Israel seemed a strong pro-Western barrier to the expansion of communism and Islamic fundamentalism

Abstract: The Septuagint is the term commonly used to refer to the corpus of early Greek versions of Hebrew Scriptures. The collection is of immense importance in the history of both Judaism and Christianity. In the Oxford Handbook of the Septuagint leading experts in the field write on the history and manuscript transmission of the version, and explain the study of translation technique and textual criticism. They provide surveys of previous and current research on individual books of the Septuagint corpus, on alternative Jewish Greek versions, the Christian 'daughter' translations, and reception in early Jewish and Christian writers. The handbook also includes several 'conversations' with related fields of interest such as New Testament studies, liturgy, and art history.

Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of the Minor Prophets provides a clear and engaging one-volume guide to the major interpretative questions currently engaging scholars of the twelve Minor Prophets. Essays by both established and emerging scholars explore a wide range of methodological perspectives. Historical studies consider the manuscript evidence for these books and overview debates about how, when, and by whom they were composed. Literary explorations consider the genres and rhetorical style of the material, key themes, and intertextual connections with other sections of the Jewish and Christian canons. A large section on the history of interpretation traces the ways in which past and present confessional communities, scholars, and artists have understood the Minor Prophets. In the final section, essays on individual books of the Twelve explore the structure, themes, and contested issues of each book.

Abstract: Access to all resources of the ICOM documentation centre. The result of the work of several generations of documentalists since 1948, but for a long time reserved for them alone, the Library database is now directly consultable by everyone, in its entirety, in the three official languages of ICOM. It contains, first of all, all the publications of ICOM and its network of international committees, national committees, regional alliances and associated bodies since their creation, but also a large number of references to books, reviews, articles, guides and manuals, directories, conference proceedings, studies and reports in the fields of interest to ICOM, such as the protection of endangered heritage, the fight against illicit trafficking in cultural property, the social role of museums, education and ethics.
Note: You will find books, journals, conference proceedings, study reports and practical guides published by ICOM and its entire network of national and international committees, regional alliances and affiliated organizations, as well as a selection of additional resources related to its missions (protection of cultural heritage, social role of museums, professional ethics, etc.)

Abstract: "Museums, Refugees and Communities explores the ways in which museums in Germany, The Netherlands and the UK have responded to the complexities and ethical dilemmas involved in discussing the reasons for, and issues surrounding, contemporary refugee displacements. Building upon an ethnographic study carried out in the UK with refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the book explores how object-led approaches can inspire new ways of thinking about and analysing refugees' experiences and European museums' work with their communities. Enlarging the developing body of research on museums' increasing engagement with human rights and focusing in particular on the social, cultural and practical dimensions of community engagement practices with refugees, the book also aims to inform growing debates on museums as sites of activism. Museums, Refugees and Communities offers an innovative and interdisciplinary examination of museum work with and about refugees. As such, it should appeal to researchers, academics and students engaged in the study of museums, heritage, migration, ethics, community engagement, culture, sociology and anthropology"--

Abstract: Converso and Morisco are the terms applied to those Jews and Muslims who converted to Christianity in large numbers and usually under duress in late Medieval Spain. The Converso and Morisco Studies publications will examine the implications of these mass conversions for the converts themselves, for their heirs (also referred to as Conversos and Moriscos) and for Medieval and Modern Spanish culture. As the essays in this collection attest, the study of the Converso and Morisco phenomena is not only important for those scholars focused on Spanish society and culture, but for academics everywhere interested in the issues of identity, Otherness, nationalism, religious intolerance and the challenges of modernity

Abstract: Verlagsinfo: This book investigates the social and religious history of the Portuguese-Jewish community of Hamburg during what may have been the most important period of its history - the second half of the seventeenth century. The political and economic rise of this small but influential community of New Christian bankers and merchants is analysed against the backdrop of its institutional dynamics, in an overall perspective never before conceived. The political, religious, economic, legal, charitable and disciplinary history of the community is thus explored through the analysis of the protocol books of the Portuguese Nation of Hamburg, written between 1652 and 1682. This is the intimate and fascinating journey of their everyday lives, hopes and challenges, as brought to us by their leaders.

Abstract: Who was the scientific progenitor of eugenic thought? Amir Teicher challenges the preoccupation with Darwin's eugenic legacy by uncovering the extent to which Gregor Mendel's theory of heredity became crucial in the formation - and radicalization - of eugenic ideas. Through a compelling analysis of the entrenchment of genetic thinking in the social and political policies in Germany between 1900 and 1948, Teicher exposes how Mendelian heredity became saturated with cultural meaning, fed racial anxieties, reshaped the ideal of the purification of the German national body and ultimately defined eugenic programs. Drawing on scientific manuscripts and memoirs, bureaucratic correspondence, court records, school notebooks and Hitler's table talk as well as popular plays and films, Social Mendelism presents a new paradigm for understanding links between genetics and racism, and between biological and social thought

Abstract: The story of Israel's foundation has often been told from the perspective of Jewish immigration to the Land of Israel. Leaving Zion turns this historical narrative on its head, focusing on Jewish out-migration from Palestine and Israel between 1945 and the late 1950s. Based on previously unexamined primary sources collected from twenty-two archives in six countries, Ori Yehudai demonstrates that despite the dominant view that displaced Jews should settle in the Jewish homeland, many Jews instead saw the country as a site of displacement or a way-station to more desirable lands. Weaving together the perspectives of governments, aid organizations, Jewish communities and the personal stories of individual migrants, Yehudai brings to light the ideological, political and social tensions surrounding emigration. Covering events in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, this study provides a fresh transnational perspective on the critical period surrounding the birth of Israel and the post-Holocaust reconstruction of the Jewish world

Abstract: The Jewish leftist lawyer Ernst Fraenkel was one of twentieth-century Germany's great intellectuals. During the Weimar Republic he was a shrewd constitutional theorist for the Social Democrats and in post-World War II Germany a respected political scientist who worked to secure West Germany's new democracy. This book homes in on the most dramatic years of Fraenkel's life, when he worked within Nazi Germany actively resisting the regime, both publicly and secretly. As a lawyer, he represented political defendants in court. As a dissident, he worked in the underground. As an intellectual, he wrote his most famous work, The Dual State - a classic account of Nazi law and politics. This first detailed account of Fraenkel's career in Nazi Germany opens up a new view on anti-Nazi resistance - its nature, possibilities, and limits. With grit, daring and imagination, Fraenkel fought for freedom against an increasingly repressive regime

Abstract: In this volume, Douglas Yoder uses the tools of modern and postmodern philosophy and biblical criticism to elucidate the epistemology of the Tanakh, the collection of writings that comprise the Hebrew Bible. Despite the conceptual sophistication of the Tanakh, its epistemology has been overlooked in both religious and secular hermeneutics. The concept of revelation, the genre of apocalypse, and critiques of ideology and theory are all found within or derive from epistemic texts of the Tanakh. Yoder examines how philosophers such as Spinoza, Hume, and Kant interacted with such matters. He also explores how the motifs of writing, reading, interpretation, image, and animals, topics that figure prominently in the work of Derrida, Foucault, and Nietzsche, appear also in the Tanakh. An understanding of Tanakh epistemology, he concludes, can lead to new appraisals of religious and secular life throughout the modern world

Abstract: Forging Ties, Forging Passports is a history of migration and nation-building from the vantage point of those who lived between states. Devi Mays traces the histories of Ottoman Sephardi Jews who emigrated to the Americas—and especially to Mexico—in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the complex relationships they maintained to legal documentation as they migrated and settled into new homes. Mays considers the shifting notions of belonging, nationality, and citizenship through the stories of individual women, men, and families who navigated these transitions in their everyday lives, as well as through the paperwork they carried. In the aftermath of World War I and the Mexican Revolution, migrants traversed new layers of bureaucracy and authority amid shifting political regimes as they crossed and were crossed by borders. Ottoman Sephardi migrants in Mexico resisted unequivocal classification as either Ottoman expatriates or Mexicans through their links to the Sephardi diaspora in formerly Ottoman lands, France, Cuba, and the United States. By making use of commercial and familial networks, these Sephardi migrants maintained a geographic and social mobility that challenged the physical borders of the state and the conceptual boundaries of the nation

The essays are organized around four nodes: contexts, content, approaches, and reception. Each essay takes up two questions: (1) what does the topic/area/issue have to do with the Historical Books? and (2) how does this topic/area/issue help readers better interpret the Historical Books? The essays engage traditional theories and newer updates to the same, and also engage the textual traditions themselves which are what give rise to compositional analyses

Abstract: The focus of this Handbook is on ritual and worship from the perspective of biblical studies, particularly on the Hebrew Bible and its ancient Near Eastern antecedents. Within this context, attention will be given to the development of ideas in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim thinking, but only insofar as they connect with or extend the trajectory of biblical precedents. The volume reflects a wide range of analytical approaches to ancient texts, inscriptions, iconography, and ritual artifacts. It examines the social history and cultural knowledge encoded in rituals, and explores the way rituals shape and are shaped by politics, economics, ethical imperatives, and religion itself

Abstract: 'The Last Ghetto' is a social and cultural history of Terezín, or Theresienstadt, a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews prior to their deportation for murder in the East. It offers the first analytical case study of a Holocaust victim society that explains human behavior in extremis, and demonstrates how prisoners created new social hierarchies, reshaped their conceptions of family, and developed new loyalties. Based on extensive research in archives around the world and empathetic reading of victim testimonies, this history of everyday life in a prisoner society reveals the many forms of agency and adaptation in Nazi concentration camps and ghettos.

Abstract: During the first half of the twentieth century, nationalizing processes in Europe and Palestine reshaped observant Jewry into two distinct societies, ultra-Orthodoxy and national-religious Judaism. Tracing the dynamics between the two most influential Orthodox political movements of the period, from their early years through the founding of the State of Israel, Daniel Mahla examines the crucial role that religio-political entrepreneurs played in these developments. He frames the contest between non-Zionist Agudat Yisrael and religious-Zionist Mizrahi as the product of wide-ranging social and cultural struggles within Orthodox Judaism and demonstrates that at the core of their conflict lay deep tensions between rabbinic authority and political activism. While Orthodoxy's encounter with modern Jewish nationalism is often cast as a confrontation between religious and secular forces, this book highlights the significance of intra-religious competition for observant Jewry's transition to the age of the nation state and beyond

Abstract: "Based on the last wills and testaments composed by Jamaican Jews between 1673 and 1815, Stanley Mirvis explores the social and familial experiences of one of the most critical, yet understudied nodes of an Atlantic Portuguese Jewish trade network. Mirvis examines how Jamaica's Jews put down roots as traders, planters, pen keepers, physicians, fisherman, entertainers, and metalworkers, and reveals how their presence helped shape the colony as much as settlement in the tropical West Indies transformed the lives of the island's Jews. Mirvis's micro-historical study illuminates Jewish involvement in planting and their patterns of slave ownership. He demonstrates how Jews struggled to find a place within the highly racialized hierarchy of Jamaican society, the Jamaican Jewish path to creole identity, the continuity of converso identity among Portuguese Jews, and the relationship between metropole and colony in the Portuguese Jewish Atlantic"--

Abstract: Jesus the Jew is the primary signifier of Christianity's indebtedness to Judaism. This connection is both historical and continuous. In this book, Barbara Meyer shows how Christian memory, as largely intertwined with Jewish memory, provides a framework to examine the theological dimensions of historical Jesus research. She explores the topics that are central to the Jewishness of Jesus, such as the Christian relationship to law, and otherness as a Christological category. Through the lenses of the otherness of the Jewish Jesus for contemporary Christians, she also discusses circumcision, natality, vulnerability, and suffering in dialogue with thinkers seldom drawn into Jewish-Christian discourse, notably Hannah Arendt, Julia Kristeva, Martha Nussbaum and Adi Ophir. Meyer demonstrates how the memory of Jesus' Jewishness is a key to reconfiguring contemporary challenges to Christian thought, such as particularity and otherness, law and ethics after the Shoah, human responsibility, and divine vulnerability

Abstract: 1945: Fast sechs Millionen Juden wurden im Holocaust ermordet.

Abstract: "I NEVER LEFT HOME is a memoir by Margaret Randall, capturing details about her life as an American writer, activist, and academic who lived in Latin America for twenty-three years. Randall resettled in the United States in the eighties, after waging a successful five-year battle against deportation. The memoir, which chronologically charts her time in the United States, Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua, reproduces the meaning and feelings of particular eras and their cultures, politics, and everyday life. Poems and quotes from others, as well as some of her own creative work, are interspersed throughout the chapters, creating vivid images of places and people in time. After an introduction that explains how the book came to be, the chapters follow Randall's life trajectory chronologically. Chapter 1 explores Randall's family history and early days in New York during an era of Anti-Semitism and Jim Crow. She speaks of her parents, Jews who had settled in New York, and how hard they tried to escape their Jewishness, an internalized prejudice that would influence most of their family life. In chapters 2 and 3, Randall reminisces on her young adult years and, particularly, her encounters with poetry, art, and feminism during the ensuing Civil Rights era. Randall then writes extensively of the political, literary, and artistic landscape of Mexico City, her years amidst the Cuban Revolution, and her time with the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. The final chapter, "Home - 1984 and Beyond," maps her return to the mainland United States and her career as a professor. This book will be of interest to a general readership, but also to students and scholars in Latin American studies and cultural studies"--

Abstract: "Catalog of Catalogs provides a comprehensive index of nearly 2,300 publications documenting the exhibition of Judaica over the past 140 years. This vast corpus of material, ranging from simple leaflets to scholarly catalogs, contains textual and visual material as yet unmined for the study of Jewish art, religion, culture and history. Through highly-detailed, fully-indexed catalog entries, William Gross, Orly Tzion and Falk Wiesemann elucidate some 2,000 subjects, geographical locations and Judaica objects (ceremonial objects, illuminated manuscripts, printed books, synagogues, cemeteries et al.) addressed in these catalogs. Descriptions of the catalog's bibliographic components, contributors, exhibition history, and contents, all accessible through the volume's five indices, render this volume an unparalleled new resource for the study of Jewish Art, culture and history." -- Provided by publisher

Abstract: Dieses Dossier ist das Ergebnis der inspirierenden Zusammenarbeit im Rahmen der Werkstatt „Future Memories.

Abstract: To mark the Bauhaus centenary, the MAKK will be presenting the work of avant-garde ceramic artist Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein and of sculptress and stage designer Marianne Ahlfeld-Heymann. Their work will be shown in a dialogue with colour studies, paintings, drawings and sculptures by Johannes Itten, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy from the museum’s own collection. With this exhibition, the MAKK retraces the work of two female artists born in Cologne to Jewish families: the cousins Margarete (1899-1990) and Marianne (1905-2003) Heymann. The exhibition title relates to the fact that 14 Cologne-born people spent some time at the Bauhaus. Up until now, with a few exceptions, their artistic legacies have not been generally known to the public. In 1920, Margarete Heymann was admitted to Johannes Itten’s preliminary course at the Bauhaus. In 1921, she went to train at the ceramic workshop Dornburg under master of craft Max Krehan and master of form Gerhard Marcks. She continued to attend courses in Weimar taught by Georg Muche, Paul Klee and Gertrud Grunow. Although Heymann left the Bauhaus in the autumn of 1921, her time there would have a lasting effect on her work. This is particularly evident in both the avant-garde and reduced forms of her consumer ceramics and in her famous disc-handle services, most notably in the tea service, which is designed completely using basic geometric shapes. Its ornamentation also lends itself to comparison with compositions by Kandinsky or Moholy-Nagy. In 1923, together with her husband Gustav Loebenstein, Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein founded the Haël Workshops for artistic ceramics in Marwitz, near Berlin. The workshops’ creative programme would soon be met with great international demand. The business was closed at the end of 1933 and aryanised in 1934. Margarete first fled to Denmark, then emigrated to the UK in 1936. Marianne Heymann first attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Cologne and, from 1923 onwards, the sculpture workshop at the Bauhaus, but she left in 1925 because the class was dropped after the Bauhaus‘s move from Weimar to Dessau. She attended Walter Gropius’s sculpture and stage design classes, but she was particularly impressed by Paul Klee’s artistic teachings. After her time at the Bauhaus, she created hand puppets and marionettes for independent productions, before working as a stage designer, both for the Mannheim National Theatre and the Cologne Opera. She created many designs for imaginative sets, costumes and masks, for example for Jacques Offenbach’s operetta La Périchole. The influence of Schlemmer’s stage art is particularly evident in her costume designs: towering headpieces, featuring concentric rings, trapezoid robes, quilted and padded borders and clear colour palettes. Marianne Heymann was also denounced to the Nazis. She fled to Paris via Ascona and emigrated to Israel in 1949.

Series Statement: An end to antisemitism!
Abstract: This volume provides a compendium of the history of and discourse about antisemitism - both as a unique cultural and religious category. Antisemitic stereotypes function as religious symbols that express and transmit a belief system of Jew-hatred, which are stored in the cultural and religious memories of the Western and Muslim worlds, migrating freely between Christian, Muslim and other religious symbolic systems. Autoren: Klaus Dawidowicz, Armin Lange, Kerstin Mayerhofer, Wien, und Simha Goldin, Benjamin Isaac, Dina Porat, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Abstract: In the wake of the Nazi regime’s policies, European Jewish cultural property was dispersed, dislocated, and destroyed. Books, manuscripts, and artworks were either taken by their fleeing owners and were transferred to different places worldwide, or they fell prey to systematic looting and destruction under German occupation. Until today, a significant amount of items can be found in private and public collections in Germany as well as abroad with an unclear or disputed provenance. Contested Heritage. Jewish Cultural Property after 1945 illuminates the political and cultural implications of Jewish cultural property looted and displaced during the Holocaust. The volume includes seventeen essays, accompanied by newly discovered archival material and illustrations, which address a wide range of topics: from the shifting meaning and character of the objects themselves, the so-called object biographies, their restitution processes after 1945, conflicting ideas about their appropriate location, political interests in their preservation, actors and networks involved in salvage operations, to questions of intellectual and cultural transfer processes revolving around the moving objects and their literary resonances. Thus, it offers a fascinating insight into lesser-known dimensions of the aftermath of the Holocaust and the history of Jews in postwar Europe.

Abstract: Migration prägt Lebensgeschichten.

Abstract: "At first glance, this book might appear to be yet another study on anti-Semitism in Argentina, supplementing those portraying this Southern Cone country as a Nazi shelter and perpetrator of anti-Jewish acts. Accounts of the last military dictatorship (1976-1983), which was responsible for the disappearance of thousands of people of Jewish origin, have contributed to this image. Memories that Lie a Little, however, challenges this view, shedding new light on Jewish experiences during the military dictatorship. Based on extensive archival research, it maps the positions of a wide range of Jewish organizations toward the military regime, opening the way for a better understanding of this complex historical period. If, then, the dictatorship was not actually anti-Semitic in the strictest sense of the term, why is it remembered as such? Historical research is complemented here by a reconstruction of the ways in which the notion of the regime's anti-Semitism was crafted from early on, and an examination of its uses, as well as the changes that this narrative underwent in the following years."--

Abstract: "This book discusses the "long fifteenth century" in Iberian history, between the 1391 pogroms and the forced conversions of Aragonese Muslims in 1526, a period characterized by persecutions, conversions and social violence, on the one hand, and cultural exchange, on the other. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous. The collection argues that the aggressive tone of many polemical texts has until now blinded historiography to the interconnected nature of social and cultural intimacy, above all in dialogue and cultural transfer in later medieval Iberia.
Abstract: This paper aims at analyzing the ideas of Arcy Tenório de Albuquerque, an ideologue and militant of the Brazilian Integralist Action, a fascist-inspired political party founded in 1932. Our sources were two books written by the author: one in 1936 and the other in 1937. Such books, pervaded by anti-Semitism and nationalism, contain the author’s impressions of his trip to Nazi Germany in 1936, as well as his opinions on Hitler, Nazism and Jews. The author states that his experience in Germany made him join the integralist movement when he went back to Brazil. Tenório regarded the Third Reich as a symbol of peace, progress and prosperity, claiming that Brazil needed something like Nazism.

Abstract: This volume aims to show through various case studies how the interrelations between Jews, Muslims and Christians in Iberia were negotiated in the field of images, objects and architecture during the Later Middle Ages and Early Modernity. . By looking at the ways pre-modern Iberians envisioned diversity, we can reconstruct several stories, frequently interwoven with devotional literature, poetry or Inquisitorial trials, and usually quite different from a binary story of simple opposition. The book’s point of departure narrates the relationship between images and conversions, analysing the mechanisms of hybridity, and proposing a new explanation for the representation of otherness as the complex outcome of a negotiation involving integration. Abstract: Zum 100-jährigen Bauhaus-Jubiläum präsentiert das MAKK das Werk der avantgardistischen Keramikkünstlerin Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein sowie der Bildhauerin und Bühnenbildnerin Marianne Ahlfeld-Heymann im Dialog mit Farbstudien, Gemälden und Zeichnungen von Johannes Itten, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky und László Moholy-Nagy aus der eigenen Sammlung.
