Abstract:
Discusses recent, mostly post-2000, British literary-critical approaches to Holocaust literature, challenging the North American hegemony in the field. Analyzes three basic approaches, which use traumatic theory, postmodernism, and the theme of descent into and return from hell, represented respectively by Robert Eaglestone, who emphasizes the effect of memoirs on historiography; Anne Whitehead, whose discussion of Wilkomirski's "Fragments" views the text as illuminating the crisis in Swiss cultural memory of the Holocaust; and Rachel Falconer, who reflects on the Auschwitz hell of Primo Levi.
