Abstract:
Describes German policy towards Haj Amin al-Husaini, the Mufti of Jerusalem, and his attempt to obtain a German-Italian commitment to Arab independence. Notes the Mufti's collaboration with the SS and his anti-Jewish activities, including pressure against the transfer of Jews from Central Europe to Palestine and on behalf of their deportation to Poland and various propagandist activities. During the 1930s, his contacts with Germany and Italy were politically motivated, but his wartime activities reflect genuine sympathy for the Nazi system and ideology, which he viewed as a new interpretation of Islamic ideas.
