Abstract:
During the first half of the 16th century, a strong movement of Jewish messianism developed amongst Portuguese Conversos, drawing from both the Old Testament and talmudic writings and the millenarist Christian medieval tradition. This messianic trend was a reaction to the expulsions and forced conversions in Spain and Portugal (1492 and 1497), when the Jews' and Conversos' suffering raised hopes of the coming of the Messiah and repatriation to the land of Israel. This public apostasy of so many Conversos is echoed in the writings of Samuel Usque and Isaac Abravanel, and of Christian writers (e.g. João de Barros, Gil Vicente). It was the reason for the creation of the Inquisition in Portugal and of the Inquisitorial trials of Lisbon and Setúbal which resulted in the death sentence for false Messiahs such as Gonçalo Eanes and Luis Dias (1541).
