Abstract:
Studies attitudes of Israelis toward Holocaust survivors as reflected in the legislative process concerning the "Law for Punishment of the Nazis and Their Collaborators", judicial decisions based on this law, and press reports. Analyzes, also, the impact of the Eichmann trial on changes in approaches of the office of the Attorney General and the judicial system toward accusations and trials under this law. About 40 trials were conducted in which the defendants were Jews; two-thirds ended in convictions. Concludes that during the legislative process and the implementation of the law in the 1950s-early 60s, Israeli society blamed the Holocaust survivors who had not emigrated to Palestine before the war, seeing them as responsible for their own fate. Fragmented information about Holocaust events created an emotional, subjective and stereotypical view of the collective experiences of the Jews in the Holocaust. The turning-point brought on by the Eichmann trial reflected a deep change due to confrontation with the individual experiences of survivors already absorbed in Israel.
