Abstract:
Focusing on John Chrysostom's sermons, and on the slightly earlier (3rd century) "Didascalia Apostolorum", discusses anti-Jewish polemics and rhetoric directed against either "Judaizers" or "Jewish Christians". Argues that the rhetoric against practices that were viewed as Jewish (e.g. visiting a synagogue, or, in the case of women, observing prohibitions related to the menstrual cycle) stemmed from attempts to control the tendency toward what Christian authorities defined as orthodoxy. The hate speech reflected anxiety about the seeming impossibiliity of establishing boundaries between the two religions.
