Abstract: This book is about ways in which the land of Israel, the homeland of the most paradigmatic of all diasporas, was envisioned in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages in the literature of the sages. It is about the Land according to the redefined Judaism that emerged in the centuries following the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE. This Judaism replaced the temple cult with Torah study - a study that pertained in part to that very temple cult, that became a portable homeland, and that reconfigured the Land.

Abstract: Die Kapitel 2 Sam 15-20 handeln von einer Krisenzeit in der Herrschaft Davids. Das Unheil nimmt seinen Ausgang in der Königsfamilie, zieht aber das ganze Land in Mitleidenschaft. David wird zeitweilig vom Thron gejagt, am Ende droht die Personalunion Juda-Israel zu zerbrechen. David übersteht all dies: teils in wenig überzeugender, teils in bewundernswerter Manier. Am Ende ist er nicht mehr der jederzeit glückhafte, sondern ein schwer gezeichneter Herrscher und Mann, wohl auch ein Tyrann. Die literarische Überlieferung davon setzt schon früh ein. Den Grundstock bildet eine Amnon-Abschalom-Novelle, die möglicherweise von einer im Text genannten Figur verfasst wurde. Sie wurde, zusammen mit einigen Stücken aus dem „Erzählkranz vom Aufstieg und Niedergang der Sauliden“, der Überlieferung vom Aufstand Scheba ben Bichris sowie einer Ministerliste aus dem Hofarchiv Teil des „Höfischen Erzählwerks von den ersten Königen Israels“, das in der mittleren Königszeit entstand. Die Darstellung ist von außerordentlicher literarischer Qualität, anthropologischer Weisheit und theologischem Tiefgang.

Abstract: Although recently more studies have been devoted to the representations of Biblical heroines in modern European art, less is known about the contribution to the portrayals of Biblical women by modern Jewish artists. This monograph explores why and how heroines of the Scripture: Judith, Esther and the Shulamite received a particular meaning for acculturated Jewish artists originating from the Polish lands in the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century. It convincingly proves that artworks by Maurycy Gottlieb, Wilhem Wachtel, Ephraim Moses Lilien, Maurycy Minkowski, Samuel Hirszenberg and Boris Schatz significantly differed from renderings of contemporary non-Jewish artists, adopting a "Jewish perspective", creating complex and psychological portrayals of the heroines inspired by Jewish literature and as well as by historical and cultural phenomena of Jewish revival and the cultural Zionism movement.

Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Julia Schneidawind rekonstruiert die Überlieferungsgeschichte deutsch-jüdischer Privatbibliotheken. Während eine nicht bezifferbare Masse an jüdischem Buchbesitz durch Raub, Verfolgung, und Krieg nach 1933 unwiederbringlich zerstört wurde, sind heute wenige Sammlungen über die Welt verstreut erhalten geblieben. So befindet sich die Sammlung Franz Rosenzweigs (1886-1929) heute in Tunesien; die Bibliothek Karl Wolfskehl (1869-1948) zwischen Jerusalem und Deutschland; die Sammlung Jakob Wassermann (1873-1934) in Nürnberg: die Bücher des Schriftstellers Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) zwischen Salzburg, London und Petrópolis in Brasilien sowie die Bibliothek Lion Feuchtwangers (1884-1958) in Los Angeles. Folgt man den Spuren der Sammlungen von ihrem Entstehungskontext an ihre heutigen Verwahrungsorte, eröffnen sich wichtige Erkenntnisse mit Blick auf die Frage nach Translokation materieller Kultur, aber auch dem Nachwirken deutsch-jüdischen Büchererbes heute in unterschiedlichen Räumen und Kontexten.Julia Schneidawind ist nicht auf eine einzelne Sammlung beschränkt, sondern kann durch die exemplarische Gegenüberstellung auch die geographische Überlieferungsbreite sowie die Diversität der Überlieferungswege der Privatbibliotheken aufzeigen. Auch die Diskrepanz mit Blick auf die Wahrnehmung, welche die Sammlungen an ihren unterschiedlichen Verwahrungsorten heute als deutsch-jüdisches Büchererbe erfahren, kommt in der synoptischen Darstellung zum Ausdruck. Zudem hat Schneidawind erstmals die Sammlungen Franz Rosenzweig in Tunis einer Bestandsaufnahme vor Ort unterzogen sowie die Überlieferungsgeschichte der Bibliothek anhand von Quellenmaterial rekonstruiert. Abstract: Zwischen 1790 und 1870 etablierten sich die Mitglieder des Verwandtschaftsnetzes der Familie Bondi im städtischen Bürgertum von Dresden, Mainz und Hamburg. Sie präsentierten sich als mustergültige Bildungsbürger, gehörten aber auch weiterhin ihren jüdischen Gemeinden an, in denen sie sowohl für die reformorientierte als auch die neoorthodoxe Richtung eintraten. Daniel Ristau untersucht die Vernetzungs- und Entflechtungsprozesse der Bondis, die in Beziehungsnetze eintraten, Zugehörigkeiten definierten und Verbindungen lösten. Vor allem ihre Briefe legen zeitgenössische Relevanzen des ‚Jüdischen‘ offen, das nicht nur je nach Situation und Perspektive unterschiedlich gedeutet wurde, sondern auch hinter andere Beschreibungs-, Verortungs- und Abgrenzungsmodi zurücktreten konnte. Die Familienmitglieder nicht schon in den Vorannahmen als ‚jüdisch‘ zu definieren, eröffnet Deutungsoptionen jenseits der bis in die Gegenwart verfänglichen Gegenüberstellung von ‚Juden‘ und ‚Nichtjuden‘.

Abstract: Der Schwerpunkt dieses Jahrbuchs ist Else Lasker-Schüler gewidmet. Anhand ausgewählter Werke wie dem 1913 erschienenen Gedichtband »Hebräische Balladen« werden die Palästina-Imaginationen der Dichterin mit ihren realen Erfahrungen, die sie etwa 1937 in »Das Hebräerland« verarbeitete, abgeglichen. Historische und literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge setzen Lasker-Schülers Schreiben in Beziehung zur Vorstellungswelt ihrer Zeitgenossen, indem sie das Schicksal von Flucht und Exil, den unwiederbringlichen Verlust der Heimat und die Bedeutung der Muttersprache als Aspekte einer deutsch-jüdischen Erfahrungsgeschichte konzeptualisieren. Im Allgemeinen Teil stehen die materiellen Spuren jüdischer Lebenswelten Ostmitteleuropas im Zentrum. Am Beispiel von verschiedenen Einrichtungen und Sammlungen jüdischer Provenienz werden die Dynamiken von mitunter multiplen Zerstörungsgeschichten und transnationalen Rettungsinitiativen während und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg untersucht. Ergänzend dazu finden sich Beiträge zur italienisch-jüdischen Geschichte, zur jüdischen Geschichte als Gegenstand der Historiografie sowie zur Rechtsgeschichte in dem Band.

Abstract: Das Buch befasst sich mit der jüdischen Geschichte und Gegenwart in Deutschland seit 1989. Im Mittelpunkt steht eine quantitativ und qualitativ geführte Studie, in der junge russischsprachige Jüdinnen und Juden sich über ihr Verhältnis zu Deutschland und Israel, sowie über familiär geprägte Erinnerungskulturen äußern und über ihre Erfahrungen als "Russen" und Juden in der deutschen Einwanderungsgesellschaft sprechen, über soziale Aufstiege und Diskriminierungen. Zur Sprache kommt ihr Verständnis vom Judentum, von mehrheitlich säkular geprägten Lebensentwürfen, aber auch von religiöser Suche, sowie alte und neue Formen jüdischer Vergemeinschaftung. Zeugen diese Schilderungen von einem Wandel jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland, so zeigt ein historisch vergleichender Blick in die besonderen Bedingtheiten der jüdischen Nachkriegsgemeinschaft in Deutschland, dass alteingesessene und neu zugewanderte Juden möglicherweise mehr miteinander teilen, als sie bislang angenommen haben.

In undertaking a comprehensive literary analysis, incorporating both the drama and the sayings together, Bledsoe shows that Ahiqar's didactic impulse is founded on a sense of uncertainty about life, offering advice for those in times of distress, much like the titular character himself. Abstract: "This book analyzes Jewish society in Roman Palestine in the time of the Mishnah (70-250 CE) in a systematic way, carefully delineating the various economic groups living therein, from the destitute, to the poor, to the middling, to the rich, and to the superrich. It gleans the various socioeconomic strata from the terminology employed by contemporary literary sources via contextual, philological, and historical-critical analysis. It also takes a multidisciplinary approach to analyze and interpret relevant archeological and inscriptional evidence as well as numerous legal sources. The research presented herein shows that various expressions in the sources have latent meanings that indicate socioeconomic status. "Rich," for example, does not necessarily refer to the elite, and "poor" does not necessarily refer to the destitute. Jewish society consisted of groups on a continuum from extremely poor to extremely rich, and the various middling groups played a more important role in the economy than has hitherto been thought

Abstract: Das Buch stellt die erste wissenschaftliche Monografie über den Holocaust in Norwegen dar. Es zeichnet die Entwicklung der antijüdischen Politik, die Verfolgung und Ausrottung der Juden in Norwegen vom Anfang der deutschen Besatzung bis zum Kriegsende nach. Nach dem Einmarsch deutscher Truppen in Norwegen im April 1940, der Ernennung des Reichskommissars Josef Terboyen und der "Nationalen Vereinigung" unter Parteichef Vidkun Quisling zur einzigen legalen Partei, führten die Besatzer nach anfänglichem Zögern eine gezielte antijüdische Gesetzgebung ein. Im Januar 1942 wurden systematisch Juden registriert. Im ganzen Land wurden sie anschließend terrorisiert und von lokalen Gestapo-Gruppierungen und norwegischen Nazi-Organisationen verfolgt. Einzelne Juden wurden verhaftet und später deportiert. Systematisch vom Rest der Bevölkerung wurden sie jedoch nicht getrennt, auch der "Davidstern" wurde nicht eingeführt. Im Februar 1942 führte Vidkun Quisling nach seiner Ernennung zum Führer einer sogenannten "Nationalregierung" das Judenverbot von 1814 wieder ein. Im Herbst 1942 wurden sowohl die Besatzer als auch die Kollaborateure zunehmend ungeduldig in Bezug auf die "Judenfrage". Wie sie daher in der Folge agierten, unterschied sich jedoch vom Vorgehen der Nationalsozialisten im Rest Westeuropas. Warum war das so? Und wie haben die Täter - Deutsche und Norweger - zusammengearbeitet, um ihr Ziel zu erreichen? Diese und weitere Fragen beantwortet der Autor und gibt dabei gleichzeitig auch den Opfern eine Stimme.

Abstract: Leserinnen und Leser kennen Lyrik vor allem aus Anthologien. »Jüdische Lyrik« wird dabei meist mit der Dichtung von Shoah-Überlebenden assoziiert. Jüdische Herausgeber sammelten jedoch schon viel früher jüdische Dichtung. Den Anspruch, für eine Gruppe zu sprechen und damit ihr Bild in der Öffentlichkeit mitzubestimmen, machte die Gattung Anthologie nicht nur für literarisch Ambitionierte attraktiv, sondern auch für unterschiedliche politische Gruppen. Unter Titeln wie »Junge Harfen« (1903), »Lyrische Dichtung deutscher Juden« (1920) oder »Jüdische Volkslieder« (1935) versuchten Kulturzionisten, eigenständige jüdische Dichtungstraditionen zu etablieren. Doch auch alternative kulturpolitische Konzepte wählen die Anthologie als Mittel, wie etwa in Julius Moses‘ Anthologie »Hebräische Melodien« (1920), die das Jüdische über das Thema und nicht die Herkunft bestimmt. Einige jiddischsprachige Anthologien schlugen einen ähnlichen Weg ein: Sie versuchen, eine nationale jiddische Dichtung zu etablieren, indem sie auf die von Herder zurückgeführte Idee von in der Volksdichtung verwurzelten Nationalliteraturen setzen. Die Anthologie zeigt sich dabei nicht nur als Publikationsform, sondern auch als literarische Gattung mit einem dezidierten Bewusstsein über ihre Geschichte. Carmen Reichert zeigt, dass Anthologien nicht nur als ein zu Unrecht vernachlässigter Teil unserer Literaturgeschichte anzusehen sind, sondern auch als wichtige historische Dokumente einer um ihr kollektives Wesen und dessen Darstellung nach außen ringenden Gemeinschaft.

Abstract: Sabrina Schütz untersucht im vorliegenden Band die Vorstellungen von ›Nation‹ und ›Nationalismus‹ im frühen deutschen zionistischen Diskurs vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Im Fokus der Studie stehen eine Reihe von markanten politisch-ideologischen Themenfeldern und Schlüsseldebatten aus der zionistischen Wochenzeitung Jüdische Rundschau, die mit Konzepten der modernen Nationalismus- und Zionismusforschung sowie mit Ansätzen aus der postkolonialen Kritik untersucht werden. In enger Anlehnung an Homi K. Bhabhas Hybriditätstheorie geht die Autorin von der These aus, dass der deutsche Zionismus eine eigentümliche, ›hybride‹ Variante von Nationalismus entwickelte, die einerseits ausgiebig auf die Traditionsbestände des deutschen Nationalismus zurückgriff, und andererseits sich zugleich davon distanzierte. The present study explores concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive – albeit contradictory or counternarrative – transformations of these adapted ideas.

Abstract: In 'The Dangerous Duty of Rebuke' Matthew Goldstone explores the ways in which religious leaders within early Jewish and Christian communities conceived of the obligation to rebuke their fellows based upon the biblical verse: "Rebuke your fellow but do not incur sin" (Leviticus 19:17). Analyzing texts from the Bible through the Talmud and late Midrashim as well as early Christian monastic writings, he exposes a shift from asking how to rebuke in the Second Temple and early Christian period, to whether one can rebuke in early rabbinic texts, to whether one should rebuke in later rabbinic and monastic sources. Mapping these observations onto shifting sociological concerns, this work offers a new perspective on the nature of interpersonal responsibility in antiquity

Abstract: 1886 erschien das erste moderne Lehrbuch der jiddischen Sprache. Der Form nach traditionell leitete es einen bahnbrechenden Aufstieg des Jiddischen zur Bildungssprache ein. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt begann man erstmals, die Muttersprache der überwiegenden Mehrheit der Juden im östlichen Europa als eine vollwertige Kultursprache wahrzunehmen, und genau in diesem Prozess spielte die muttersprachliche Bildung eine entscheidende Rolle. Doch über ihre Geschichte ist bisher wenig bekannt. Evita Wiecki erläutert anhand von Jiddisch-Lehrbüchern, welche Formen die aufblühende jiddische Bildung annahm, welche Funktion ihr zugeschrieben wurde und mit welchen Schwierigkeiten ihre Befürworter zu kämpfen hatten. Deutlich wird dabei auch, wie herausfordernd es für sprachliche Minderheiten ist, ohne staatliche und institutionalisierte Unterstützung das Fortbestehen von Sprach- und Kulturkenntnissen zu sichern. Die Studie umspannt ein knappes Jahrhundert (1886–1964), das sich durch signifikante Wendepunkte der jüdischen Geschichte bis hin zum absoluten Bruch durch den Holocaust auszeichnet. Dabei blieb die jiddische Sprache für die Menschen ein maßgeblicher Identifikationsfaktor – trotz grundverschiedener Bedingungen in Politik und Gesellschaft gab es zwischen den jeweiligen Phasen ungeahnte Kontinuitäten. So steckt in der Geschichte des Jiddisch-Lehrbuchs eine Kulturgeschichte des Jiddischen in Polen.

Abstract: "In The Danielic Discourse on Empire in Second Temple Literature, Alexandria Frisch asks: how did Jews in the Second Temple period understand the phenomenon of foreign empire? In answering this question, a remarkable trend reveals itself--the book of Daniel, which situates its narrative in an imperial context and apocalyptically envisions empires, was overwhelmingly used by Jewish writers when they wanted to say something about empires. This study examines Daniel, as well as antecedents to and interpretations of Daniel, in order to identify the diachronic changes in perceptions of empire during this period. Oftentimes, this Danielic discourse directly reacted to imperial ideologies, either copying, subverting, or adapting those ideologies. Throughout this study, postcolonial criticism, therefore, provides a hermeneutical lens through which to ask a second question: in an imperial context, is the Jewish conception of empire actually Jewish?"--
