    Abstract: The book The Last of the Lord's Poets deals with the beginning of Modern Religious Poetry in the land of Israel as it was reflected in the early work of Yosef Zvi Rimon (1889-1958), with the many turbulent upheavals the old and new Jewish settlement went through, as a background. Unlike other poetries, religious and semi-religious, which dealt many times in religious issues in-order to deal with personal or public issues, Rimon's Poetry focused on God, the search for him and the rebellion against him. Rimon's God was not a universal God, Deistic or the God of the supreme. Rimon dedicated his life and his literature, according to his own observation, to the God of Israel, the unique Historic Jewish people's God, with all of his cultural national symbols, according to his standing in the religious tradition. Rimon's poetry is based, similarly to all major religious poetry, on varied texts, many times from distant historical linguistic facets. Rimon used biblical texts, Talmud, Midrash, Medieval Jewish philosophy and poetry, Kabala, Hasidism and modern language and literature. The use of these texts is not external or random, but an educated use by a person who knew these literatures inside and out and dealt with them as if they were holly script. Therefore one should be patient while reading, and the rewards will follow. This kind of poetry requires time in-order to reveal, facet upon facet, the entirety of the meanings hidden within it. Reading Rimon's poems can be compared to time travel, in which the reader discovers hidden worlds, delt by lovingly and fearfully by whole generations until they were intertwined together by the poet in his poems

    Abstract: In the Years 1989-1991 Israel renewed its diplomatic relations with the USSR, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Poland and Czechoslovakia, relations which were severed subsequent to the Six- day- war. Albania was added to the above, with which Israel established diplomatic relations for the first time. In these years Israel's representatives held talks with envoys from East Germany towards establishing diplomatic relations. This was never fulfilled due to East Germany's refusal to recognize its part in paying restitutions to Israel for its part in the persecution of Jews during the Nazi rule and due to the approaching German reunification process. The Author, who served in those years as Deputy Director General of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in charge of East and Central Europe, and who took part in these processes, documents, for the first time, the chain of contacts between Israel and the countries of East-Central Europe (except for the USSR) which lead up to renewing diplomatic relations between them. The book also deals with their hostile policies towards Israel in the international and Middle Eastern arena, Anti-Semitism against the Jewish minority living among them, and the status of the Jewish Communities in these countries during the break in Diplomatic relations and in the time that followed. The Political and Economic motivations of each of these countries to improve relations with Israel are also dealt with from the mid-eighties of the previous century towards a gradual renewal of diplomatic relations together with their liberation from their dependence on the USSR and their transition from their Communist regime to a liberal one

    Abstract: The story of the Golan and its position between Israel and Syria is not only a legacy of the past. It has been interwoven in the political experience of the two states up to now. The story exposes a significant gap between memory and history. This gap is natural, understandable, and characteristic of issues dealing with current history and especially of those whose subjects and the resulting findings touch upon present questions. Such a gap usually leads to a preliminary reaction of difficulty in accepting research findings. Personal or public memory confronting these findings has already been structured and there is a natural fear of updating it. Additionally, in some cases, research conflicts with existing myths, and myths, which have their own validity, cannot easily be changed. While the story of history is formulated and updated and is ultimately dependant upon research which has been conducted using methods and accepted rules for historical research, memory is personal and private, choosy, subject to illusion and dependent on its agents. Thus, the gap between the two is personal. Regarding the Golan, the reader may evaluate its extent. The gap between memory and history is important as it directly influences the political process in Israel where public opinion sways the decisions of leaders. Therefore to reach a peace agreement, it is a precondition that the Israeli public appreciate this gap. Only in this way will public opinion be able to accompany the process and evaluate it in a serious manner, with careful consideration based on the facts, as detached as possible from the emotions it evokes

    Abstract: This book analyzes the influence that Aristotelian logic had on the understanding of methods of halakhic inference. “Methods of halakhic inference” refer to methods of Talmudic inference and argumentation, mainly the thirteen exegetical principles of the Torah, enumerated at the beginning of the Sifra. The thirteen exegetical principles are the most famous methods of halakhic inference. They are considered basic and fundamental rules by which the oral halakhic tradition is related to the Scriptures. No wonder, therefore, that there are dozens of commentaries to this set of rules. The study presented in this book focuses on the logical trend of commentaries on the Thirteen Principles. In these commentaries Aristotelian logic was applied, in a variety of ways. This special way of combining philosophy and halakha has significance not only for the history of the development of Talmudic methodology, but also for the understanding of the ongoing interaction between particular Jewish ideas and tradition on the one hand, and the external “universal” culture and literature on the other. Analysis of the logical commentaries on the Thirteen Principles can demonstrate how the original Greek doctrines were transmitted, mainly through Arabic philosophy, but sometimes also through Christian-scholastic philosophy, to the medieval Jewish sages, and how these Jewish sages applied those doctrines to develop a more sophisticated Talmudic methodology

It claims that gratitude is a moral obligation of great importance, being the right response to something done for the agent and out of regard for her.     Abstract: The standard study of Talmud is to accept the given as ultimate, that the sayings and the interpretations recorded therein are faithful to what was actually said. After having checked for the genuine version, for the right GIRSAH, eliminating the scribal errors, the text assumes reliability and serves as a starting point for further discussions and additional deductions. For over forty years, Prof. David Halivni has questioned the given as the authoritative text and argued for the necessity to go back in time and reexamine the veracity of the interpretations. Many of the given interpretations are forced, do not neatly fit the text they interpret and often attribute to the authors of the statements intentions that they did not necessarily share. As a consequence, substitute interpretations were necessary to which the multi volumes of "Sources and Traditions" were dedicated. While the books dealt mainly with the actual Talmudic interpretations, the introductions dealt with the causes responsible for the deviations from the original. It took the writings of a few volumes to become clear that the interpretations, unlike the apodictic statements were not officially transmitted by the Transmitters, the professional reciters and reached the later compilers which are referred to in the volumes as STAMMAIM, anonymous scholars, only through random survival which was not always complete. Sometimes it survived in a truncated form which the later compilers filled in, conjecturing what was missing. The present volume contains all of the introductions which provide the reader not only with the final conclusion but also with the developmental stages which led to that conclusion further strengthening its plausibility

    Abstract: Yehuda Halevi: Poetry and Pilgrimage follows the life story of the greatest Hebrew poet of medieval times from his first publication in Christian Toledo to his heroic journey toward Zion from Muslim Spain. The description is based, for the first time, on the entire collection of his poetry- the Diwan, which was edited and reedited between East and West at every important crossroad of his life. This in turn is done through comparison to autobiographical letters and contemporary correspondence discovered and collected over the past 50 years in the Cairo Geniza collections. Documentary material and Literary works, which were shun behind the iron wall in The Russian National Library in St. Petersburg, are woven for the first time into one, enabling us to examine closely the intricate relationship between old Jewish traditions and the ideological heritage associated with Halevi's innovative writings in prose and in poetry. Confronting Halevi's "Zion, will thou not ask"? opens the study which is mainly concerned with the story of Halevi's odyssey from Christian to Muslim Spain and eventually to Egypt, including the epic quest to the beloved yet fatal Zion.     Abstract: Order In the Bible: The Arrangement of the Torah in Rabbinic and Medieval Jewish Commentary examines ideas about biblical order in the commentaries of Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Nahmanides against the background of the Midrashic tradition. On the face of it, the arrangement of portions in the Torah is chronological, but close examination reveals more than a few discrepancies. The Midrash sometimes responded by saying that "There is no 'earlier' and 'later' in the Torah" (en muqdam ume'uhar ba-Torah)-- the order of the Torah is not always chronological. This response left the reader facing unexplained juxtapositions of chapters and verses. In some of the cases, the sages asked, lama nismekha, “Why were these two portions juxtaposed?” Usually, they sought to connect the unconnected stories and verses in the midrashic fashion, by adding to the events of the stories or by taking the second unit as the outcome of the first and deriving therefrom some moral teaching. Occasionally though, we find an attempt to answer the question of juxtaposition in terms that might be considered closer to the peshat method of explication. Moving in the direction of the peshat, medieval Jewish exegetes tried to explain biblical arrangement of both narratives and law based on thematic, associative, or literary links. Their attempts resulted in new ideas about the ordering of the Torah. This book contains hundreds of references to juxtaposition and non-chronological arrangements cited in the writings of the above commentators. These examples are put into the framework of each commentator's general approach to interpretation and his particular sense of biblical order.     Abstract: The publication of Korot 2007-2008 has to our regret been seriously delayed. There has, however, already been considerable interest toward the next issues, and thus we trust that Volume 20 will appear within the annual timetable. The main part of this issue of Korot consists of research reports from a workshop on the subject “History as Argument in Biomedicine: Representations of National Socialist 'Euthanasia' Between Politics and Historiography, ca. 1945-2000.” This workshop was part of a research project in the context of the Coordinated Research Program “Cultures of Memory” (Sonderforschungsbereich “Erinnerungskulturen”) located at the University of Giessen, Germany. The meeting took place in Beit Hagath in Ein Karem, Jerusalem, on January 29th, 2007. Other themes presented in this volume include questions on the experimental method and on reproductive choices as seen in Talmudic literature, on medieval Jewish physicians in the Arabic cultural area, on Karaite physicians, and on the relationship between modern medicine and the Kabbala, ending with the early stages of the medical profession in Eretz Israel. They thus cover nearly 2,000 years of Jewish medical history. The volume is, as usual, bilingual (English and Hebrew), with contributions from Germany, France and Finland, in addition to Israel. Korot is unique as the only journal devoted to Jewish aspects of the history of medicine and science. To quote Prof. Leibowitz (z”l), one of the first initiators of Korot, the purpose of the publication is: ...preference for topics based on sources not readily accessible to our colleagues abroad in their researches. Avoiding, as far as possible, a narrow parochial approach, we hope to enlarge the knowledge of medical historical facts and concepts in a field often regarded as somewhat esoteric.1 It is our hope that the present volume of Korot has succeeded in this endeavor. Our special thanks are due to Dr. Kenneth Collins for his kind assistance in the proofreading stage. Our next issue will emphasize the subject of Jews and medicine in the Renaissance period, e.g., Tuviah Cohen and Yosef Shlomo Delmedigo.     Abstract: Studi e Ricerche Sulla Storia, la Cultura e la Letteratura Degli Ebrei d'Italia ITALIA Periodical for research in the history, culture, and literature of the Jews of Italy. Whoever is dealing with Jewish thought and humanities knows well how important and influential the Italian Jews were and are in these wide ranges of fields. The large creation and thought of the Italian Jews was passed on for multi generations in Hebrew and Italian while keeping a firm methodical tradition which ITALIA periodical is following and keeping the importance of studying and researching the language, literature, culture and history of Italy and Italian Jews. Italian Jews had a strong presence in the European culture from the 13th century on to our current time. Documents, manuscripts and many books show us many remarkable authors and thinkers, Italian Jews and others, that had strong ties with the rather small ethnicity of Italian Jews. Even though there are many respected studies on the contributions of Italian Jews to the cultural making of the Italian nation, there is still a necessary need for a centralized publication of these past and new studies. ITALIA is an important focus point for an academic discussion on the culture, literature, history and language of Italian Jews as well as a place where we can weight the conclusions of these studies and place goals for future doing in these exciting full of aspects fields

    Abstract: Metropolitan reforms have been implemented in Canada at a scale and frequency greater than anywhere else in the democratic world. Recent Canadian metropolitan reforms are setting precedents and their fate could influence metropolitan agendas worldwide. This edited collection deals with local government reforms in major Canadian metropolitan areas and provides comparative insights from other countries. Steps undertaken by Canadian provinces have seemingly preferred in some cases 'old regionalism' territorial reforms over 'new regionalism' horizontal networks of governance. Canadian experiences indicate that both weak metropolitan mechanisms and neighborhood-level governments tend to be unstable, often not fulfilling expectations. Moreover, it seems that only old regionalism deals effectively with sharing fiscal burdens, whereas new regionalism approaches can be effective in development. The cross-national case studies provide a perspective on the role of different political systems and political cultures in determining the metropolitan governance agenda and the reforms undertaken, revealing considerable similarities in the agenda and diversity in responses

    Abstract: The atmosphere of hostility between Jews and Arabs which accompanied the establishment of the State of Israel cast a shadow over the cultural contacts between the two sides. As a result of the emotions engendered by the conflict, and the differences between the cultural discourse of the two sides, many found it difficult to take an objective view of the other side. The fact that Bialik, Agnon, and A.B. Yehoshua have been published in Arabic is evidence of a desire for dialogue. This book, however, describes how ideological considerations have dominated translation activity. Translation in the Shadow of Confrontation examines the translation activity of modern Hebrew literature into Arabic. It focuses on the development, the status and the character of these translations in the first forty years of the existence of the State of Israel, and on the dominant norms which influenced translation before, during and after its execution. To this end dozens of translations of contemporary Hebrew fiction and poetry into Arabic which have appeared in various publications in Israel and the Arab world are analyzed. Three areas of translation are discusssed, each of them unique from several points of view: the individuals and bodies involved in translation activity, the considerations which motivated them, and their translation policy. In the translation activity which took place in Israel in the 1950s and 1960s the involvement of elements in the establishment is pronounced. They aimed at translating into Arabic texts with a social and ideological character, and, therefore, chose works which reflected the Zionist consensus. They deleted parts of the text and added to it, and translated into Arabic with a high stylistic register. After 1967 translation activity in Israel was in the hands of independent organizations supported by the establishment. Most of the translators were faithful to the Hebrew text, used Hebrew in their translations, and related to Hebrew culture as a hegemonic culture. The defeat of 1967 led to an increase of interest in Israeli society, culture and literature in the Arab world. Most of the translators tried to use their work to expose the racist and propagandist character of Hebrew literature, as they saw it, and chose for translation texts whose content emphasized its alien character

    Abstract: What was the balance of power in the battles of Judas Maccabaeus and in Israel's War of Independence? Were they, as is commonly assumed, wars of the few against the many? These questions were discussed in a conference organized by the School of History of the Hebrew University in December 1999. The participants were in general agreement that the discussion of the balance of power must not be confined to the number of troops and that other variables must be taken into account. Nevertheless the numbers of troops is important. Conflicting views were presented on the battles of Judas Maccabaues whereas on the number of troops in Israel's War of Independence there was general agreement. Published in this collection, for the first time, are a General Staff document from 1952 and a research paper by Yehosuha Ben Arie for the IDF History Branch from 1955. Both conclude that in the matter of the number of troops the War of Independence on the whole was not an instance of the few against the many. Other articles, based on lectures delivered at the conference include Bezalel Bar Kochva and Israel Shatzman on the battles of Judas Maccabaeus; Beni Morris and Amitzur Ilan on the balance of forces in the War of Independence, Eyal Nave and Mordechai Bar-On on the evolution of Israeli collective memory of the balance of power and on possible ways of representing the facts of the case in school books; Shmaryahu Ben-Pazi, Moshe Erenwald and Nimrod Hagiladi on three case studies: Safad, The Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem, and Rechovot; and Joseph Heller's essay on the centrality of the 'few against many' theme in David Ben Gurion's thought which widens the scope of the discussion in the conference

    Abstract: Literature for children written in pre-state Israel played a major role in shaping the young generation's values, experiences and conception of the world. Up until the 1940s, the hegemonic current of this literature's related the tale of the Zionist-Socialist accomplishments and presented the Hebrew generation growing up in the country as the opposite of the Diasporic Jew. During World War II, with the arrival of the news of the Holocaust transpiring in Europe, as well as at the period of conflict with the British, the story for children had changed dramatically. This shift has left a considerable mark on Hebrew culture as a whole. In her book From the School Desk We Were Taken Yael Darr describes how writers for the young committed themselves toa new story, focusing on the battle and sacrifice of youths. In this new narrative the Hebrew children were portrayed as skillful fighters serving role models even for the parents' generation. Yet, Darr also suggests that the literature for children did not ignore the news about the destruction of the European Jewry. While it might be expected of literature aimed at young readers to spare them exposure to such a catastrophe, it was in fact precisely that literature which was quick to tell the story of the disaster. Furthermore, in its varied and numerous references to the Holocaust the children's literature even preceded the Holocaust literature for adults. Darr's book recounts the military-national story as well as the tale of the devastation of the European Jewry in all its complexity. The writer also shows how some of the literary forms dealing with the Holocaust during the British Mandate were abandoned, when towards the founding of the state the children's literature fused the heroism of the country's youth and the story of the Holocaust weaving them into a pronounced national lesson. The book uncovers a wide range of literary works for children and youngsters written in the nineteen forties both by mainstream, center-stage, authors and by those in its margins. It closely analyzes several establishing works of fiction thus shedding light on the society and culture of those years while undermining conventions concerning the position of the Israeli based Jewish community concerning the Holocaust and its survivors

    Abstract: The poetry of Y.Ogen has been cast aside from modern Hebrew Poetry inner circle of the 1930's due to its affiliation to the some what forgotten poetic group of the poet Yitzhak Lamdan who was the literary editor of 'Gilionot' literary monthly. The mystic and melodic literary course permeated at the beginning of the 1930s' to the Hebrew Poetry by that circle's special style, first and foremost due to Ogen's writing, has by many aspects, foreseen the late 1930's modernism, such as Alterman's Poetry. Ogen's book 'Ba-hizdakchut' (Gilionot, 1935) has generated a tacit Altermanic revolution, that has not been fully acknowledged, because of the expulsion of Gilionot Circle from the critical discourse of the poetic modernity of the time. The monography of Y.Ogen describes in details this poetic course of action in a manner separated from the 'Literary Republic' conventional discourse, that has ultimately linked between modernistic strategies and violent culture quarrels and poetic strategies of annihilation of old traditions in favor of a new style.The critical discourse hereby discussed - literary ecology - deals with the poetic habitat and writer's cultural environment and rehabilitates outcasted poets by reinsuring their formative influence upon the esthetical climate, especially by pointing out the writer's poetical skills as a form of an artistic niche in an environment which characteristics are both cultural and materialistic

    Abstract: This book examines the construction of gendered identities within the Israeli army and their relationship with the conceptions of citizenship. Based primarily on interviews, the book explores the different construction of gendered identities amongst four distinct groups: combat soldiers, soldiers in blue-collar roles, soldiers in white-collar roles and women soldiers in “masculine" roles. The author argues that during their military service, soldiers in varied military roles construct different conceptions of masculinity and citizenship, both of which are constituted through an ongoing dialogue with the hegemonic masculinity of the combat soldier, which is also identified as the “good citizen”. Therefore, these multiple gendered and civic identities reflect and reproduce social stratification along the lines of gender, ethnicity and class
