    Abstract: Gabriele Tergits (1894–1982) Roman über das Berlin der Weimarer Republik »Käsebier erobert den Kurfürstendamm« (1931) war ein unmittelbarer Erfolg. Ihr jüdischer Familienroman »Effingers«, in vieler Hinsicht ein jüdisches Pendant zu Thomas Manns Buddenbrooks, konnte jedoch erst 1951 veröffentlicht werden. Durch die nationalsozialistische ›Machtergreifung‹ schon 1933 ins Exil gezwungen, floh Tergit zunächst nach Prag, dann mit ihrem Mann nach Palästina und schließlich nach England wo sie von 1957 bis 1981 Sekretärin des PEN-Zentrums deutschsprachiger Autoren im Ausland war.Hans Wagener zeichnet mit seiner Studie das Leben und Werk einer jüdischen Autorin nach, deren Karriere durch den Nationalsozialismus aus der Bahn geworfen wurde und die trotz aller Widrigkeiten ihres Exils unermüdlich weiter an ihrem literarischen Œuvre gearbeitet hat. Eindrücklich und umfassend hebt Wagener zugleich die paradigmatische Bedeutung Gabriele Tergits für ihre Zeit hervor.

    Abstract: ‘Identity’ and ‘sectarianism’, two crucial and frequently used concepts in Qumran studies, are here problematized, appraised, and redefined. Two social-scientific theories inform the investigation of the serakhim (rule documents) and pesharim (commentaries). The sociology of sectarianism is presented in retrospect in order to identify appropriate methodological tools for speaking about sectarianism in the ancient context, and for comparing sectarian stances in the serakhim . Furthermore, a social-psychological perspective into identity is introduced for the first time for appreciating the dynamic and context-dependent nature of a person’s social identity. The final chapter takes a fresh approach to the study of the pesharim , arguing for the need to read each Pesher as a whole. It analyses the prototypical ‘teacher’ and brings forward new interpretations of this captivating and cloudy figure

    Abstract: Thematisch umfassende Darstellung des Mediums Comic, vorgelegt von einem ausgewiesenen Fachmann (u.a. Beiträge in Periodika, Vorträge, Ausstellungen, "Die großen Künstler des Comics", BA 2/10). Eine Standortbestimmung und eine gute Definition machen den Anfang, den Hauptteil nimmt eine Geschichte der Comics im 20. Jahrhundert (weiter eingeteilt in geografische Unterabschnitte) ein, der abschließende Part - zum 21. Jahrhundert - bietet Beschreibungen des Status quo und einen Ausblick. Schikowski belässt es jedoch nicht bei einer bloßen Chronologie, sondern arbeitet, wie der Untertitel verspricht, in die Historie theoretische Grundlagen und Kurzbiografien prägender Autoren/Zeichner ein. Fast 120 Jahre Comics auf knapp 300 Seiten abzuhandeln, erfordert präzises Arbeiten. Das erfüllt der Autor voll und ganz, seine Ausführungen sind konzentriert, aber sehr gehaltvoll und verständlich geschrieben, die Schwarz-Weiß-Bildbeispiele hätten jedoch etwas zahlreicher sein können. Aktueller Grundlagentitel, neben A.C. Knigge (BA 9/04), S. McCloud (BA 9/01, 4/02 und 2/08) und A. Platthaus (BA 12/08) empfohlen. (1) (Roland Schwarz)

    Abstract: This book, based on new research in the Spanish archives, is the first full-length account of the activities of the 'linajudos', genealogists whose occupation was to scrutinize ancestries and to extort money from candidates for offices and honors who, in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain, had to prove that they were not of converso (that is, Jewish) descent. In Seville many of the patrician families that dominated the transatlantic trade and governed the city in this period had intermarried with the conversos or were themselves of similar origin. This book views the 'linajudo' phenomenon as part of the wider problem of the assimilation of the conversos into sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish society.

    Abstract: Among the musicians who revolutionized and modernized synagogue music during the 19th century, three stand out as the most influential ones: Salomon Sulzer (1804-1890) in Vienna, Samuel Naumbourg (1817-1880) in Paris and Louis Lewandowski (1821-1894) in Berlin. Naumbourg was born in Bavaria and integrated into the intellectual society of Paris. He was moved by a deep love for the traditional Jewish chants of Southern Germany and a keen awareness that the Emancipation of French Jewry called for a new kind of synagogue music. His cantorial compendia "Semiroth Yisrael" and "Agudath Shirim" included many old chants and numerous new compositions by Naumbourg himself and by his friends, among them Jacques Fromental Halévy. Naumbourg was also a pioneer in searching for the historical roots of Jewish music
