Abstract: These rare black-and-white photographs, some of which have never been previously published, reveal Israel layer by layer, starting from the 1930s. The book is a journey through time to the virginal landscapes, the streets of the cities, and the landmark events and those of lesser significance. The book offers a loving view of the people who started everything here. Rudi Weissenstein, 1910-1992, immigrated to pre-State of Israel, Palestine, in 1936, with a camera, a press card and 10 Palestine pounds in his pocket. His dedication and love of photography soon made him one of the most professional and well-respected photographers in the country. All the country´s "who's who" made the pilgrimage to his photography store, the Tzalmania. Rudi Weissenstein immortalized the amazing creation and establishment of the new country with a quarter of a million negatives, with pictures that became milestones of Israeli culture.

Abstract: The author, a filmmaker who conducted oral history interviews for Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation, recounts the affecting experience of her mother, Lotte, a German Jew who barely escaped the fate of family members murdered by the Nazis. In 1938 Lotte followed her new husband to Cuba on the ill-fated S.S. St. Louis. After the ship was turned back to Europe, she was interned in a Dutch detention camp, smuggled out to Cuba and reunited with her husband (from whom she was later divorced). Lotte mostly refused to talk about the past, but a carton sent by three close German Christian friends from her childhood̶Ilonka, Erica and Ursula̶loosened her tongue. These young women, at great personal risk, had collected and preserved photos, documents and artifacts from Lotte's family. Because of their gift, Meyerhoff visited Germany many times to meet the surviving Ursula and Erica and their families. Much of the rambling text deals with the closeness that she developed with them and her desire to integrate her warm feelings toward her new friends with the tragic loss of a homeland that darkened her mother's life in America. Abstract: From the time when I was 8 to 11 years old, I hid from the Nazis in a chickenhouse with my parents and their friends, Heinz and Elli Graumann. Since the personal experiences I recall are those of a preteen, I hope to connect well with children about that age. I tell about my rescue from the Holocaust based on drawings I made as a child, helped by two talented amateur artists: my father and his friend Heinz. I use both my art and theirs to help explain what life was like for us at that time. Each chapter of the book has one or more illustrations to help me put into words what I was thinking about at the time. I describe how we ran away from our old apartment in Amsterdam because we had to hide from the Nazis, who wanted us Jews dead, or at least out of Europe. We first moved from place to place and town to town because no one wanted us to hide with them for more than a few days. We were fortunate that ultimately we were sheltered by Harry Janssen and his family, who gave us the chickenhouse to live in.
