Abstract: National costume dolls as a socio-cultural phenomenon are part of popular a culture that began before the establishment of the State of Israel, and came to its end in the late 1980s; its halcyon days were between the 1950s and the 1970s. These dolls were made by artists, artisans and craftspeople who used an array of techniques and styles, typically employing straightforward methods. Most of the doll makers and designers were not born in the country; some of them had had art or artisan education and others had a modicum of knowledge of the field. The dolls were displayed and sold privately, in souvenir shops or in shops owned by institutional bodies such as WIZO, Maskit and Hameshakem. They were bought as souvenirs, mementoes of a place or an experience, by Israelis and particularly Jewish tourists who took them home with them after they left the country, a scrap of their national homeland in the shape of ornamental dolls that depicted local types, later to be put on display in their faraway homes. In retrospect, the repertoire of these national costume dolls evokes memories, and perhaps even yearning. However, the exhibit seeks to expand the scope beyond the nostalgic context and regard these dolls as a symbolic unit that conveys messages and meaning about the period, and the changes that took place over seven decades. The dolls in this exhibit manifest symbols, values and myths that relate to the creation of Israeli identity: nationality, ethnicity, the melting pot, pluralism and multiculturalism. Presenting and interpreting the doll collection will draw the boundaries of representation and reveal the figures that are included, as well as those which are not. The exhibit attests to the tension embodied in the dolls, while attempting to answer the question: did these dolls - created over the years -reflect, represent, shape or invent the sought-after imagined and hegemonic Israeliness?

Abstract: The photographs of Gaston Zvi Ickowicz (b. Buenos Aires, 1974) excel in attentive observation of "place" and conduct a unique dialogue with modern and contemporary photography. His precise, introverted gaze captures signs and remnants of occurrences, often facing down, to the ground. His focusing on the layered surface exposes an esthetic, political and emotional complexity and crystallizes into a typological poetic definition of the place.

Abstract: Mit Moissej Nappelbaum stellt die Galerie Berinson den bedeutendsten Portraitphotographen Russlands vor.

Abstract: The publication A Cookbook for Political Imagination accompanies the exhibition "... and Europe will be stunned" for the Polish Pavilion at the 54th Biennale of Art in Venice. This is not a traditional exhibition catalogue but rather a manual of political instructions and recipes, delivered by more than forty international authors. Covering a broad spectrum of themes, the cookbook comprises manifestos, artistic contributions, fictional stories to elements of visual identity, food recipes, social advice and guidance for members of the movement. It is the first book published under the auspices of the Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland, and has been edited by the curators of the exhibition, Sebastian Cichocki and Galit Eilat, and designed by Guy Saggee from Shual Studio (Tel Aviv). Abstract: Theodore Ross was nine years old when he moved with his mother from New York City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Once there, his mother decided, for both personal and spiritual reasons, to have her family pretend not to be Jewish. He went to an Episcopal school, where he studied the New Testament, sang in the choir, and even took Communion. Later, as an adult, he wondered: Am I still Jewish? Seeking an answer, Ross traveled around the country and to Israel, visiting a wide variety of Jewish communities. From ̮Crypto-JewsŁ in New Mexico and secluded ultra-devout Orthodox towns in upstate New York to a rare Classical Reform congregation in Kansas City, Ross tries to understand himself by experiencing the diversity of Judaism. Quirky and self-aware, introspective and impassioned, Am I a Jew? is a story about the universal struggle to define a relationship (or lack thereof) with religion.

Abstract: Jakob Steinhardt, who emigrated from Germany to Palestine with the rise of the Nazi regime, is best-known for his dramatic woodcuts. This wide-ranging exhibition presents his masterpieces in prints, drawings, and paintings. Following his arrival in Jerusalem in the mid-1930s, he became one of the city's leading artistic figures and a beloved teacher first in his own studio and then at the Bezalel School. His artworks reflect his sharp perceptions of his hometown in eastern Germany, bohemian life in interwar Berlin, the life of the Jews in Lithuania's remote villages, the neighborhoods of Jerusalem before and after the establishment of the State, and, alongside these, the biblical figures that accompanied him throughout his career. His expressive works clearly reflect his worldview, which saw art as a means of educating the public and of transmitting political and social messages. The exhibition acknowledges the bequest of the artist's works to the Israel Museum, through the generosity of his family.
