    Abstract: Does the design of the Tabernacle in the wilderness correspond to God’s blueprint of Creation? The Christian Topography, a sixth-century Byzantine Christian work, presents such a cosmology. Its theory is based on the “pattern” revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai when he was told to build the Tabernacle and its implements “after their pattern, which is being shown thee on the Mount.” (Exod. 25: 40). The book demonstrates, through texts and images, the motifs that link the Tabernacle and Creation. It traces the long chain of transmission that connects the Jewish and Christian traditions from Syria and ancient Israel to France and Spain from the first through the fourteenth century, revealing new models of interaction between Judaism and Christianity

    Abstract: National costume dolls as a socio-cultural phenomenon are part of popular a culture that began before the establishment of the State of Israel, and came to its end in the late 1980s; its halcyon days were between the 1950s and the 1970s. These dolls were made by artists, artisans and craftspeople who used an array of techniques and styles, typically employing straightforward methods. Most of the doll makers and designers were not born in the country; some of them had had art or artisan education and others had a modicum of knowledge of the field. The dolls were displayed and sold privately, in souvenir shops or in shops owned by institutional bodies such as WIZO, Maskit and Hameshakem. They were bought as souvenirs, mementoes of a place or an experience, by Israelis and particularly Jewish tourists who took them home with them after they left the country, a scrap of their national homeland in the shape of ornamental dolls that depicted local types, later to be put on display in their faraway homes. In retrospect, the repertoire of these national costume dolls evokes memories, and perhaps even yearning. However, the exhibit seeks to expand the scope beyond the nostalgic context and regard these dolls as a symbolic unit that conveys messages and meaning about the period, and the changes that took place over seven decades. The dolls in this exhibit manifest symbols, values and myths that relate to the creation of Israeli identity: nationality, ethnicity, the melting pot, pluralism and multiculturalism. Presenting and interpreting the doll collection will draw the boundaries of representation and reveal the figures that are included, as well as those which are not. The exhibit attests to the tension embodied in the dolls, while attempting to answer the question: did these dolls - created over the years -reflect, represent, shape or invent the sought-after imagined and hegemonic Israeliness?

    Abstract: A number of recent publications have explored what became of art looted during the Second World War and its aftermath, but little attention has been paid to the fate of Jewish ceremonial objects used during synagogue services and in private households. Like other cultural artefacts, ceremonial objects were silent witnesses to a historical period of profound injustice. In this book, museum professionals from Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Frankfurt, Warsaw and Los Angeles, along with a number of other researchers, tell the story of these objects for the first time: their looting, their rediscovery, the difficult process of restitution and their worldwide dispersion after the war to locations that often remain unknown. Within the context of European history, the articles explore the complex web of interests and relationships between the victims, the perpetrators, the Allies and the Axis countries. They do not address claims and restitution issues, but seek to foster understanding of the diverse range of situations in the many countries confronting these issues, situations arising from specific historical and political events during and after the Second World War. The book is also a valuable reference work with photographs and the texts of the international agreements on provenance research and restitution.

    Abstract: Mit Moissej Nappelbaum stellt die Galerie Berinson den bedeutendsten Portraitphotographen Russlands vor. Die Ausstellung umfasst mehr als 50 seltene Originalabzüge - darunter Portraits von Wladimir Tatlin, Sergej Eisenstein, Boris Pasternak, Maxim Gorki, Dmitri Schostakowitsch, Sergej Prokofjew oder Lion Feuchtwanger. Nappelbaums Laufbahn begann mit seiner handwerklichen Ausbildung in Minsk, an die er Reisen innerhalb Russlands und den USA anschloss. Unterwegs sammelte er Eindrücke über photographische Moden und Verfahren und nach einem Besuch der Moskauer Tretjakov-Galerie benannte er Rembrandt als seinen wahren Lehrmeister. Zunächst ließ sich Nappelbaum als Photograph in Minsk nieder, bevor er 1910 mit seiner Familie nach Sankt Petersburg übersiedelte und sein Atelier am Newski Prospekt eröffnete. Nachdem Nappelbaum 1918 das erste offizielle Portrait Lenins angefertigt hatte, das millionenfache Verbreitung fand und eine Ausstellung seiner Werke im Moskauer Anitschkow-Palais zufolge hatte, war sein Ruf vollends gefestigt. In seinem Atelier saßen neben seiner gewöhnlichen Portraitkundschaft auch zahlreiche Politiker, Wissenschaftler, Maler, Bildhauer, Dichter, Komponisten und Schauspieler Modell. Nappelbaum entwickelte einen persönlichen Stil, den er keiner Mode anpasste, sondern konsequent für sein gesamtes Lebenswerk beibehielt. In oft stundenlangen Sitzungen arbeitete er seine Portraits sorgsam heraus. Durch konsequente Lichtführung, die meist spärlich eingesetzten Requisiten und die besondere Aufmerksamkeit, die er Blickrichtung und Händen seiner Modelle zuteil werden ließ, entstanden wohlkomponierte Charakterstudien. Die malerische Bearbeitung des Hintergrunds auf der Negativplatte kennzeichnet viele seiner Photographien. Nappelbaum schuf die endgültigen Portraits der neuen sowjetischen Elite. Wie Hugo Erfurths Künstler- und Gelehrtenportraits in Deutschland, so spiegeln die Portraits Moissej Nappelbaums das Antlitz der Epoche in Russland wider. Sie machen ihn zu dem photographischen Chronisten der Sowjetzeit.
