Abstract: Artists in the Photo League, active from 1936 to 1951, were known for capturing sharply revealing, compelling moments from everyday life. Their focus entered on New York City and its vibrant streets a newsboy at work, a brass band on a bustling corner, a crowded beach at Coney Island. Though beautiful, the images harbor strong social commentary on issues of class, child labor, and opportunity. The Radical Camera explores the fascinating blend of aesthetics and social activism at the heart of the Photo League, tracing the group's left-leaning roots and idealism to the worker-photography movement in Europe. Influenced by mentors Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, and Paul Strand, artists in the Photo League worked within a unique complex comprising a school, a darkroom, a gallery, and a salon, in which photography was discussed as both a means for social change and an art form. The influence of 'the Photo League' artists on modern photography was enormous, ushering in the New York School. Presenting 150 works of the members of 'the Photo League' alongside complementary essays that offer new interpretations of the League's work, ideas, and pedagogy, this beautifully illustrated book features artists including Margaret Bourke-White, Sid Grossman, Morris Engel, Lisette Model, Ruth Orkin, Walter Rosenblum, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, and Weegee, among many others.

Abstract: Continuing its distinguished tradition of focusing on central political, sociological, and cultural issues of Jewish life in the last century, Volume XXVI of the annual Studies in Contemporary Jewry examines the visual revolution that has overtaken Jewish cultural life in the twentieth century onwards, with special attention given to the evolution of Jewish museums. Bringing together leading curators and scholars, Visualizing and Exhibiting Jewish Space and History treats various forms of Jewish representation in museums in Europe and the United States before the Second World War and inquires into the nature and proliferation of Jewish museums following the Holocaust and the fall of Communism in Western and Eastern Europe. In addition, a pair of essays dedicated to six exhibitions that took place in Israel in 2008 to mark six decades of Israeli art raises significant issues on the relationship between art and gender, and art and politics. An introductory essay highlights the dramatic transformation in the appreciation of the visual in Jewish culture. The scope of the symposium offers one of the first scholarly attempts to treat this theme in several countries. Also featured in this volume are a provocative essay on the nature of antisemitism in twentieth-century English society; review essays on Jewish fundamentalism and recent works on the subject of the Holocaust in occupied Soviet territories; and reviews of new titles in Jewish Studies.

Abstract: "I wept when I got my rifle ... I wasn't defenseless anymore. For the first time, I could defend myself." Many German-Jewish refugees who fought against Nazi Germany on the side of the coalition against Hitler shared the sentiments of the famous author Stefan Heym. Persecuted in Germany, they returned as liberators. The temporary exhibition focuses on unfamiliar life stories as well as prominent biographies such as that of the Nobel Peace laureate Henry Kissinger, the writer Stefan Heym or the journalist Ernst Cramer. The often-dramatic escapes and difficulties of beginning anew in their host countries are also addressed. By 1943, German Jews had been integrated into all Allied armies. They fought in North Africa and Sicily, or landed in Normandy on D-Day. After the victory over Nazi Germany, they helped to shape the country's political future as part of the military administration and participated in denazification, reeducation, and building a democratic broadcasting system and press. Some of the former refugees were deployed in their former home regions, where in some cases they even came face to face with those who had once persecuted them. Returning was especially terrible for those who personally experienced the liberation of the concentration camps. Original objects, photos, and impressive eyewitness interviews help to bring the memorable biographies alive. The temporary exhibition illuminates fourteen turbulent and moving life stories, which supplement existing narratives of the suffering and sacrifices of German Jews in the face of Nazi extermination policy. The temporary exhibition is the Allied Museum's contribution to the Berlin Theme Year "Diversity Destroyed. Berlin, 1933 - 1938 - 1945."

Walter Lewy starb 1995.

Abstract: During the Dutch Golden Age in Amsterdam, the engraver Salom Italia, a Ashkenazi Jew born in Mantua in 1619, invented a new style of decoration for the scrolls that told the biblical story of Esther. This tale of Jewish exile in ancient Persia still appeals to the imagination: the salvation of the Jews by the clever Queen Esther is celebrated each year by Jews around the world on the joyous holiday of Purim. Salom Italia's Esther scrolls are lavishly illustrated with triumphal arches, pictures of the main characters, narrative scenes, and vignettes with Dutch landscapes. His original decorations reflect the successful integration of Spanish and Portuguese Jews into their new homeland, the Netherlands. Even today, Italia's Esther scrolls are coveted collectors' items. Now, for the first time, six of these world-class masterpieces have been brought together, accompanied by the work of Dutch contemporaries who inspired Salom Italia.

Abstract: Proclaim the pilgrimage to all people. They will come on foot and on the backs of swift camels from distant corners of the earth. Quran, surat al-Hajj vs 27-30 It is a sacred duty for Muslims, wherever they may reside, to go at least once in their lives to Makkah, the heartland of Islam where the Prophet Muhammad received the revelation in AD 632. Drawing millions of pilgrims annually, the Hajj is a powerful bond that brings Muslims together from across the world. It takes place in the twelfth month of the Muslim year dhul hijja. Over the course of one week a number of specific rituals are performed which involve circumambulation of the Kaba, the cube-shaped building in the centre of the sanctuary at Makkah, and visiting key sites. The Kaba is believed to have been built by Abraham and his son Ishmael and was the focus of pilgrimage before the coming of Islam. Tracing the footsteps and personal experiences of pilgrims across the centuries, this fascinating book takes the reader on a physical and spiritual journey. The spirit of Hajj is further evoked through a wealth of illustrations, including personal objects carried by the pilgrims throughout the centuries; souvenirs collected along the route; early travel photographs; maps; manuscripts; wall paintings; compasses and astrolabes; textiles; and, contemporary artworks and images that capture the scale and emotional intensity of Hajj today.
Note: This publication accompanies the exhibition Hajj: journey to the heart of Islam at the British Museum from 26 January to 15 April 2012
