Abstract: Around the year 1500, Frankfurt's citizens lived in constant fear of terrible epidemics, the Turkish threat, and famine. The Church tried to calm them by organizing religious meetings and passion plays, in which the Jews were presented as the source of all their miseries, and as usurers, and the Jews' role in the crucifixion of Jesus was emphasized. Hans Holbein's paintings of Christ's passion, in Frankfurt's "Dominikanerkloster", can also be considered as antisemitic propaganda of the time. Citizens of Frankfurt, incited by these teachings, attacked the Jewish quarter in 1525, but the pogrom was halted by the authorities.
