Abstract:
Summarizes Osiander's arguments against the accusations of ritual murder, probably written on the occasion of the Poesing ritual murder case of 1529 but first published, anonymously, probably in 1540. Osiander shows the illogicality of the accusation, and suggests possible explanations. In 1540, Jews presented this booklet in their defense at a ritual murder case in Eichstädt. It was passed on to Johannes Eck for his opinion, and he published a vituperative response, noting the Jews' evil propensities and accounts of all the ritual murder cases of previous centuries. Notes that it was Eck who represented the accepted view of the period. It suited the purposes of the ruling class to divert the frustrations of the lower classes onto the Jews, and to nurture superstition and fear under the guise of supporting popular tradition.
