Abstract:
Appelfeld's novel "Hayim shlemim" (2007) is dedicated to his mother, who was killed by the Nazis in summer 1941. It relates the story of Helga, the daughter of an Austrian father and a Jewish mother who converted to Christianity. After her mother is betrayed to the Nazis by her father and sent to a labor camp, Helga runs away to search for her mother. She eventually discovers that her mother was killed, but also that she had returned to her Jewish identity and faith, and helped other camp inmates survive the war. She sees her mother as a "white bird", and they become one in spirit. Notes that the novel reflects Appelfeld's feelings of spiritual connection with his own mother.
