Abstract:
In honor of Prof. Jacob Klein, who is an expert on Sumerian culture, discusses a hymn describing the run of King Shulgi of Ur (2094-2047 B.C.E.) from Ur to Nippur (ca. 150 km.) and back in one day. Demsky then discusses the social and cultural role of long-distance runners (generally messengers employed by the king) in ancient Israel, as related in the Bible and in Talmudic literature, regarding Jewish runners in Eretz Israel and in Babylonia.
