Abstract:
Reprint of a paper presented at an international colloquium on the Holocaust (New York, 1974). Discusses the antisemitism of Christian civilization as an effect of the hostile attitude of Christian theology towards Judaism, including the demonic vision of the Jew. Describes the principal traits of Christian anti-Jewish polemics and affirms that most of its elements were already present in the New Testament. Surveys the status of the Jews in Christian societies throughout the ages and asserts that the Jews remained persons without civil rights and were not respected in many parts of Europe - until the 20th century. Concludes that the Church should recognize its responsibility and that a new theology of hope instead of triumphalism should develop within the Christian world. Two responses follow this article: Walter Burghardt, "Réponse à Rosemary Ruether" (pp. 108-111) and Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, "Persécution et préservation: Une réponse juive à Rosemary Ruether" (pp. 112-125). Yerushalmi disputes the black picture painted by Ruether, emphasizing Christian protection of the Jews throughout the ages. Discusses the passage from medieval to modern antisemitism, underlining that the Holocaust was the "product" of a neo-pagan state. Recalls that the attitude of the pope during this period was quite different from the protective attitudes of popes towards the Jews in the medieval period.
