Abstract:
Frank discusses her personal impressions from the letters which her grandfather, Harold Kirson, wrote in 1944-45, when he served in the US Army in Europe. Many of his letters describe the experiences of others, as told to him. Some of the narrators whose personal stories he, as a "proxy-witness, " retold were Holocaust survivors. Going through her grandfather's wartime letters enhanced Frank's sense of being Jewish, made her perceive the Holocaust as an event touching her personally, and gave her a sense of personal responsibility in preserving the memory of the Holocaust.
Note:
On a collection of letters written during the war by the author's grandfather, an Jewish-American soldier who as a member of Patton's Third Army liberated Nazi concentration camps.
