Abstract:
Analyzes the book by the Swiss conductor and composer Ernest Ansermet (1883-1969), published in 1961, and other writings by him. Ansermet's theory of music is totally dependent on philosophical, religious, and moral conceptions founded in Christianity. His views on civilization were based on H.S. Chamberlain's writings. Ansermet asserted that the decline of Western civilization is due to contamination of its values by an inferior, materialistic, and corruptive Jewish influence. He criticized contemporary music (for example, he attacked Schoenberg vehemently) on the basis of ethical, national, and racial criteria.
