Abstract:
Schröder notes that in the course of his research, the town's authorities refused to make archival material available to him, and townspeople denied (contrary to facts) that they took any part in the persecution of the Jews. In 1933, 268 Jews lived in Wittlich. Even before the Nazi period they were not integrated in the community, although townspeople now claim that they were. It was local Nazi functionaries who initiated and carried out boycotts and profited from Aryanization measures. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, all of the Jewish homes, as well as the interior of the synagogue, were destroyed. Many of the Jews emigrated, but others moved to Köln or to the Netherlands, where the Nazis caught up with them later. More than 85 of Wittlich's Jews were deported, ca. 30 of them directly from the town.
