Abstract:
Traces the history of the Jews in Boppard (97 Jews in 1925) from the 11th to the 20th centuries. Discusses medieval pogroms, the "Guter Werner" blood libel, and the accusation of well poisoning, and residence and other restrictions in the early modern period. Before the Nazi takeover, the largely Catholic population tended not to support the Nazi party. However, after 1933 the Jews suffered as elsewhere from boycotts and violence. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom the Jews themselves were forced to break up the interior of the synagogue; it was not burned because of its proximity to houses. The majority of Jews emigrated; the rest were made to do forced labor until they were deported in April 1942. Six perpetrators were sentenced to prison in 1949. Perpetrators of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom were tried in 1951, but only one was sentenced.
