Abstract:
Poles, including Catholics, have been preoccupied with their own victimization during World War II. Contends that it is necessary to recognize the negative role of many Catholics during the Holocaust and how this derived from Catholic theology. Notes that Catholic leaders have no answers concerning the Holocaust. Rather than focusing on Divine silence, one must ask about human silence, specifically in regard to the Polish attitude toward the Holocaust, which was overshadowed by concern with Polish Catholic martyrology. After the fall of communism, there is both a persistence of antisemitism and a questioning of it. When Obirek failed to find satisfactory answers to questions about the Poles and the Holocaust, he turned to Polish Holocaust literature, which was more helpful.
