Abstract:
The war between the Hamas regime in Gaza and Israel in the summer of 2014 brought in its wake a new explosion of global Jew-hatred that has been more intense than any previous wave of hostility since 1945. One of the striking features of this global wave is the primary role of Islamist and Muslim demonstrators along with pro-Palestine groups on the Left. Islamism and outright antisemitism have begun to play a spearhead role in stirring up antagonism toward Israel in the West, turning the issue from a political conflict between the Palestinian, or Arab, people and Israel into a religious conflict between Islam and Judaism. In Muslim countries of the Middle East (Turkey, Iran, the Palestinian Authority, etc.), as well as among the Muslims in Europe, anti-Zionism has become increasingly intermingled with anti-Judaism and eliminationist racist antisemitism. European Jews, especially in France, find themselves caught between the Islamist wave and the rise of far-right nationalists, like the National Front. What is more striking is the myopia of the West regarding the danger of Islamist antisemitism. The Western media continue to view Hamas as a typical liberation movement, thus ignoring the blatantly antisemitic principles and wording of its 1988 Covenant, as well as its practice in Israel and in the PA. Despite extant legislation for the prosecution of hate speech, Western authorities ignore the aggressive antisemitic rhetoric of Islamists. Recent anti-Jewish incidents in Europe attest to the loosening of residual taboos concerning antisemitism. Antisemitism is once again providing a litmus test for the moral health of Islamic and Western civilizations.
