Abstract:
A lecture delivered by the former Chief Rabbi of France in Paris, June 1987. Traces Christian-Jewish relations since 1945, emphasizing the Seelisberg Conference of 1947 and its resolution renouncing Christian traditional views which led to the "teaching of contempt". It was, however, not publicized or accepted by the Vatican until 1965 when the "Nostra aetate" declaration included some elements of the Conference declarations. Discusses the draft versions of "Nostra aetate" and the final version, recalling that the formula definitively clearing the Jews of the deicide accusation was modified as a result of Arab pressure. also discusses the evolution of Christian-Jewish relations in France. Followed by a discussion on pp. 443-448.
