Abstract:
Discusses the life and writings of Goldstein, an assimilated German Jewish writer. In 1912, at a time of growing nationalist tension, he published an essay in "Kunstwart" entitled "Deutsch-jüdischer Parnass", in which he noted that Jews have penetrated all areas of German cultural life, not realizing that they are not wanted; that antisemites are unreceptive to rational argument; that the time of internationalism is past; and that German Jews must win respect by developing a Jewish national culture. The article aroused lively discussion among German Jews, and was exploited by antisemites and by the Nazis, who reprinted it in its entirety in a propaganda publication in 1935. Goldstein developed his thesis in subsequent essays, but eventually relinquished it.
