Abstract:
The film "Schindler's List" brought the issue of the Holocaust to public attention. But it is also a biographical, and moreover an autobiographical, film; in a metaphoric way it tells the story of Spielberg himself. For the sake of this autobiographism, Spielberg, in many cases, even departed from the biography of the real Schindler in his oeuvre, downplaying some of his motives and inserting purely fictional scenes. In the film, Schindler's maturation process parallels that of Spielberg: just as Schindler rose from a successful capitalist to a rescuer of human beings, Spielberg rose from profitable entertainment movies to this epic work. Spielberg, born in an open society remote from Jewish tradition, could not identify with the victims of the Holocaust. He identifies with the universal good, personified in Schindler and Stern, and invites the viewer to do the same.
