    In:  Sociological Papers 5,3 (1996) 1-74
    Sprache: Englisch
    Erscheinungsjahr: 1996
    Titel der Quelle: Sociological Papers
    Angaben zur Quelle: 5,3 (1996) 1-74
Schlagwort(e): Antisemitism History 1945- ; Antisemitism Public opinion ; College students
Kurzfassung: Based on an assumption that the future chance of antisemitism becoming a political factor in Hungary depends on social elites (i.e. on intellectuals), analyzes results of a sociological survey held in December 1992 among 1,000 university students in Hungary. The respondents were classified in five groups: four of them range from "non-antisemites" to "extreme antisemites", and a small group of "doctrinaire liberals". Shows that the level of the respondent's antisemitism depends on his/her family background, his/her level of religiosity, and the place of his/her profession in the prestige-hierarchy. The level also correlates with level of xenophobia or liberalism. Distinguishes several types of antisemitic attitudes (theological, Jewish conspiracy, Shylock stereotype, Jewish-Bolshevik stereotype, and "anti-Zionism"). Analyzes the degree of latency of antisemitism; in particular, to what extent the respondents who gave antisemitic answers regard these answers as antisemitic. The results show that the "antisemitic core" among students is small; the "resistant group" comprises only 20% of the respondents.

    Angaben zur Quelle: 23,2 (1993) 51-59
    Schlagwort(e): Antisemitism History 1945- ; Jews History 1945- ; Stereotypes (Social psychology)
Kurzfassung: Summarizes and comments on the findings of a sociological research project on the attitudes toward Jews of a sample of 1,000 students from Hungarian universities and colleges in 1992-93. Focusing on stereotypes, remarks that Jews are perceived as a distinctive outgroup, with stereotypical negative or positive attributes. According to the survey, 48% of the students are not antisemitic, 45% are "moderately" antisemitic (with some anti-Jewish prejudices), and 7% form an antisemitic hard core. The last category considers the Jews as a dangerous rival group. Points to a significant change in the prejudicial stereotypes, e.g. the lack of influence of the traditional stereotype of the money-grubbing Jews. Concludes that the survey shows that stereotyping does not necessarily imply antisemitism. It could reflect, also, the relationship between prejudice and attitudes toward the assimilation of the Jews.

    Schlagwort(e): Antisemitism History 1945- ; Jews History 1945-
Kurzfassung: The social and occupational factors which defined the place of the Jews in prewar Hungarian society have largely disappeared, and those Jews remaining in Hungary seek to assimilate. Nevertheless, a separate Jewish and non-Jewish consciousness continues to exist because of differing reactions to the "liberation" of Hungary in 1945 and to the communist regime. A small number of Jews supported the regime in order to solve their own identity problems. Many others suffered under communism, but there were stereotypes which developed identifying Jews with the communists which led to persistent antisemitism. In the present, some advocates of cultural nationalism reject the Jews as an "alien element" in Hungarian society.

Kurzfassung: Based on interviews with young Jews in Hungary today, focuses on their Jewish identity. These children of Communist Party activists wished either to camouflage or to ignore the issue of their Jewishness, but it was forced upon them by the environment which was more or less pervaded by antisemitism. Some reacted by experiencing trauma or by rejecting of the truth. Notes the continued existence of popular antisemitism among the rural population in Hungary.

    Angaben zur Quelle: 69,1 (2002) 179-194
Schlagwort(e): Antisemitism History 1945- ; Antisemitism Public opinion
Kurzfassung: Based on results of a survey conducted in 1995, discusses latent antisemitism in Hungary. Considers factors that affected whether respondents thought it risky to express anti-Jewish opinions. Concludes that left-wing and right-wing antisemites deal differently with their anti-Jewish feelings. The former tend to conceal their views, while the latter express them. For leftist antisemites, antisemitism is not considered politically correct. Antisemitism functions as a code that distinguishes between political-cultural camps and establishes public political and cultural identity. Pp. 195-199 contain a response by Nils Muižnieks, focusing on public, rather than private, manifestations of antisemitism. He states that latent prejudice can be activated and become mobilized into the public sphere. Praises Kovács for providing tools to measure such eruptions of prejudice.

Kurzfassung: Antisemitism re-emerged in post-1989 Hungary and in other Eastern European countries not because it was "frozen" during the Communist period, but because, gradually, the ruling Communist parties constructed their own "Jewish question" which they were eager to "solve", thus keeping popular anti-Jewish prejudice alive.
