Abstract:
Based on results of a survey conducted in 1995, discusses latent antisemitism in Hungary. Considers factors that affected whether respondents thought it risky to express anti-Jewish opinions. Concludes that left-wing and right-wing antisemites deal differently with their anti-Jewish feelings. The former tend to conceal their views, while the latter express them. For leftist antisemites, antisemitism is not considered politically correct. Antisemitism functions as a code that distinguishes between political-cultural camps and establishes public political and cultural identity. Pp. 195-199 contain a response by Nils Muižnieks, focusing on public, rather than private, manifestations of antisemitism. He states that latent prejudice can be activated and become mobilized into the public sphere. Praises Kovács for providing tools to measure such eruptions of prejudice.
