Abstract:
A paper presented at the Annual Conference of the Australian Association for Jewish Studies, University of Sydney, July 1996. Surveys anti-Jewish tensions in Egypt during the ancient period. Manetho was the first documented Egyptian to show sharp anti-Jewish trends in his writings. There were other pagan anti-Judaic writers in Egypt, like Apion; after Apion, Greek anti-Judaism faded. In the period of Roman rule, the Jews of Alexandria experienced restrictions and persecutions. In the early Christian period, discusses the works of Clement of Alexandria and Cyril of Alexandria. The latter's violent anti-Jewish rhetoric was influenced by pagan stereotypes of Jews.
