Abstract:
Pp. 96-102 analyze the Jewish themes in the novel, set in Danzig, which deals mostly with the complexities of Polish-German history, relationships, hatred, and war. Describes two Jewish characters in the novel. One of them is Sigismund Markus, the owner of a toy shop, who poisoned himself after the destruction of his shop during the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. The second, Mariusz Fajngold, escaped from Treblinka, where his wife was killed, and came to Danzig haunted by Treblinka's ghosts. Discusses the role of these characters in the novel, and literary ways of dealing with the horrors of the Holocaust.
