Kurzfassung:
The years 1955-1970, the period between the foundation of the Leo Baeck Institute and the change in editorship of the Year Book, was a time of sharp discussions amongst the three branches of the LBI (in Jerusalem, London, and New York) on how to represent Jewish reactions to antisemitism in the late Weimar and Nazi periods. The founders touched on this issue very reluctantly, and failed to produce any comprehensive research on the subject. Several factors contributed to this failure, among them a factional divide between assimilationists and Zionists, and the LBI's decision to base its research on contemporary documents (which were scarce) and not use survivors' testimonies. They also had a fear of dealing with the actions of leading Jewish organizations (e.g. the Centalverein and the Reichsvertretung) under the Nazis. This fear was enhanced by the publications of Arendt and Hilberg in the 1960s.
