Abstract: The present study presents an alternative model of pre-monarchic Israel’s political organization in tandem with an investigation into the role of place in the preservation of memory that explains how and why the tradition of Hazor’s demise was included in the Bible. Corresponding to the type of decentralized political organization attested in the Amarna letters, the core narratives in Judges depict Israel as a confederation of independent entities whose concerns revolved around local affairs. As the identity of Israel evolved over time, the memories of the most significant of these affairs were retained, often with the aid of material remains in the familiar landscape. The apparent injunction against building over Hazor’s 13th century palace ruins during Israel’s subsequent occupation and the inclusion of Hazor’s destruction from competing perspectives in the Bible suggest that it was an important event in Israel’s history, even if the entirety of Israel was not involved.

Abstract: This article explores how the motif of Uzziah’s צרעת‎ in 2 Kgs. 15:1-7 has inspired the Chronicler, Josephus, and rabbinic commentators. In the Book of Kings, Uzziah’s disorder is used to explain an abnormal political arrangement in which the crown prince served as co-regent. The Chronicler, by contrast, takes Uzziah’s disorder as an opportunity to expound on the king’s sacrilegious behavior. The Chronistic tradition is further developed by Josephus and the rabbis who reinterpret Uzziah’s צרעת‎ as sign of an abnormal emotional life. Consequently, each source displays its own understanding of צרעת‎ and its implications concerning the king’s conduct and character. These differences in the depiction of Uzziah’s disease point to dissimilar frameworks of interpretation which are motivated by different attitudes toward the temple and the Davidic Dynasty.

Abstract: Recent doctoral research on the Psalter continue to reinforce the idea that the 150 individual psalms are not haphazardly arranged and that various editorial techniques have been employed to shape the Psalter. In this article, I propose a novel editorial technique that has hitherto not been recognized or systematized in the literature on Hebrew poetry or the Psalms—the ‘Pan-Psalter Occurrence Scheme’—a careful use and placement of certain words/phrases across the entire Psalter such that all their sequential occurrences reflect a well-designed schema. Two lexemes, יעקב‎ (‘Jacob’) and ברית‎ (‘covenant’) are studied. The occurrences of these words are found to develop along a linear dimension (metanarrative) and display remarkable concentric arrangements. The POS technique suggests that the entire Psalter is indicative of intentional and careful macrostructural design. This article will contribute to our knowledge of ancient poetic editorial techniques underlying the composition of the Hebrew Psalter.

Abstract: This article expands upon a previously published study in this journal that examined a literary strategy which employs linguistic devices of doubling in biblical narratives that reference twins. It demonstrated that Israelite authors employed several devices, including dual forms, gemination, doubled vocabulary, polysemy, and paronomasia on the number ‘two’, in order to match form to content. Here, we add studies of four biblical passages (Judges 5, Proverbs 20, 30, 31) as well as a brief excursus on a similar strategy in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and we argue that the strategy of doubling also appears in narratives that feature pairs or the doubling of amounts (i.e. not necessarily texts that employ the term ‘twin’).

Abstract: This article explores the textual variation of the name of the son of Saul referenced in 2 Sam 3-4. While the MT reads Ishbosheth, 4QSama and LXX read Mephibosheth. The vague reading in MT 2 Sam 4:1-2 of ‘the son of Saul’ probably indicates that the parent text of the MT once also referenced Mephibosheth. While the variant is widely understood to be a simple accidental scribal insertion, this article argues that it instead reflects the redactional development of Samuel. It does this by (1) considering the implications of 2 Sam 21:1-14 for the rise of the Davidic dynasty and the fall of the Saulides, (2) bringing the question of Samuel’s sources and their integration to bear on the textual issue, and (3) considering ways that this reading of Samuel clarifies the story in 2 Sam 3:7-11.

Abstract: Biblical narrative is typically populated with characters who skilfully quote, misquote, or even distort the words of other characters. However, it is often rare in these biblical quotations to find the quotation and manipulation of the speeches of a dead character. Significantly, Genesis 49:29-50:21 describes the double quotations of a dead patriarch-Jacob-and the artful use of his quoted words for persuasive purposes by both Joseph and his brothers. In particular, the study engages the presence of stylistic changes, omissions, and even fabrications in these double quoted speeches of this trickster par excellence. In this way, it seems Jacob-even though now dead-continues to live once more in these scenes of quoted speeches.

Abstract: The relationship between the book of Jeremiah and the archaeological data can be viewed through the lens of Judean personal names from the 7th to the early 6th centuries BCE. Previous onomastic studies have searched the epigraphic record for names of individuals mentioned in Jeremiah. This study, however, analyzes and compares characteristics of personal names in both sources, such as name type, the existence and type of theophoric elements, the location of the theophoric element in a name (either prefixed or suffixed), the יהו-יה‎ and יהו-יו‎ variants, and popular names. The comparison reveals similarities between Judean personal names in Jeremiah and those found in the archaeological data, indicating that the book of Jeremiah probably reflects authentic pre-Exilic Judean onomastic traditions. Nevertheless, the differences found in the distribution of יהו‎ and יה‎ between names in Jeremiah and the archaeological data may demonstrate that the names in Jeremiah were affected by redaction.

Abstract: This article argues that the Hebrew Bible is an important resource for adding insights into illness language and narratives by making a case for the use of medical humanities in biblical studies. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this article utilises existing research concerned with illness experiences and identity as a heuristic tool for addressing the study of illness in the Hebrew Bible. However, as well as providing a useful heuristic lens, this article argues that ancient texts can also bring a richness to present day perspectives and analysis of illness accounts within medical humanities. A key contribution of this article is the demonstration that ancient religious texts such as Psalms 88 and 102 share many of the themes, concerns, and motifs which resonate in modern day research concerning illness experiences. We will initially examine modern illness experience research and then turn to evaluate Psalms 88 and 102 from this perspective.

Abstract: While both Job 3 and Jeremiah 20 contain curses against the day of one’s birth, the language of Job’s curses resonates more forcefully than does Jeremiah’s. In this study, I argue that the feature which lends Job such extraordinary power is not only the author’s dramatic use of personification but specifically the author’s personification of the mythologically potent figures, day and night. Among Israel’s ancient neighbors, day and night were regularly regarded as deities. While Israel does not appear to have followed suit in divinizing these two, the author of Job does take advantage of their mythological background to heighten the personal nature of the entities the suffering patriarch curses. Job’s treatment of night and day reveals an important nexus between personification and mythology and sheds light on other, similar examples of personification in the Hebrew Bible.

Abstract: The flood narratives in the Bible and the ancient Near East continue to attract scholarly attention from a variety of disciplines. This article incorporates recent research on ancient Near Eastern flood narratives into documentary examinations of Gen. 6-9. In doing so, important facets of the priestly flood account come to the fore, particularly the role of meat consumption. Meat-eating and animal consumption is then set in the trajectory of Second Temple Jewish retellings of the flood in Jubilees and 1 Enoch, showing the adaptation of this feature in reception history particularly in Jubilees 5.
