Abstract:
Analyzes the intended meaning in the passage in Matthew 27:24-25, which is seen by many as a malicious anti-Jewish polemic. There is a consensus opinion that Matthew wants to absolve the Romans at the expense of laying full blame on the Jews for Jesus' death. Using the concept of narrative degrees in the story, discusses the possibility of a double meaning in the Matthew account, relating it to a previous passage - Matthew 26:28 - and Deuteronomy 21:8. In both cases blood and washing of hands are associated with forgiveness of sins. Contends that Matthew viewed all present at the Crucifixion as responsible for Jesus' death, including Pilate, but that his blood was shed to forgive all sins, including those of the Jews.
