Abstract:
A vigorously-debated topic in New Testament studies today is the issue of anti-Judaism in early Christian documents in general and in Luke-Acts in particular. The consensus view finds in Luke-Acts an anti-Jewish tendency which accuses the Jewish people as a whole of obduracy and condemns them as forever rejected by God. Summarizes the views of scholars such as Jacob Jervell, who has emphasized the positive attitudes of Luke toward Jews, and Jack Sanders, who states that Luke-Acts is an anti-Jewish work. A major difficulty in both approaches lies in the failure to specify the character of the implied reader of Luke-Acts. Suggests that Luke was addressing his writings to the Godfearers - Gentiles who were attracted to Judaism but who had not yet made a commitment. This would explain initial positive comments on Judaism and on individual Jews in Luke-Acts and subsequent condemnation of the Jews as a whole. Analyzes, especially, Acts 28:28.
