Kurzfassung:
War and genocide shatter identities, but also produce identities by defining enemies and creating victims. The Nazis blamed the Jews for the German defeat in World War I and defined them as enemies of Germany; after World War II, all Germans saw themselves as victims of Hitler and the Nazis, and refused to accept responsibility for the Holocaust. Among the Jews, the desire to rebuild individual and collective identity after the war caused much conflict - e.g. Hannah Arendt and Raul Hilberg maintained that the Jews were their own enemies during the war, while many Jews accused the historians of being the worst enemy, self-hating Jews. Discusses, also, utopian ideologies, like that of the Nazis, which generally require destruction of those who are not part of the utopia; psychological and sociological aspects of the Holocaust; and Holocaust historiography and education.
