Abstract:
Discusses the works of two American Jewish writers, both of whom are children of Holocaust survivors: Lev Raphael, the author of a collection of short stories "Dancing on Tisha b'Av" and the novel "Winter Eyes", in which the Holocaust theme is interwoven with the theme of homosexuality; and Art Spiegelman, the author of the Holocaust comics "Maus". Both writers were confronted with the problem of how to define their Jewishness when ties with the traditional generation of grandparents were severed by the Holocaust, and God seems to have withdrawn from the world. The redefining of their Jewish identity, by the authors and their literary heroes, is based on personal history rather than classical sources and communal norms; it is consonant to Irving Greenberg's concept of the voluntary covenant in post-Holocaust Judaism.
