Kurzfassung:
Discusses the attitude of Tomas G. Masaryk (1850-1937) toward the Jews. Notes that Masaryk's mother inculcated in him a demonic image of the Jews, including a belief in the blood libel. However, he came to understand that these were superstitions that were opposed to his view of justice and humanity. He consistently defended Jews against antisemitic attacks, notably in the Hilsner blood libel case (1899). When Czechoslovakia attained independence after World War I, and he became the first president, he assured Jewish leaders that their national rights would be respected. However, he did not believe in the possibility of assimilation but held that Jews should adhere to their own nation. Jews saw him as a protector and philosemite, but he himself denied this: he fought not for Jews, but for the principle of justice.
