Kurzfassung:
Analyzes various types of religious writings composed in the Warsaw ghetto, such as prayers, lamentations, stories of martyrdom, sermons, etc. In the diary of Karol Rotberger, his prayers are modeled on lamentations in the Books of Jeremiah and the Psalms. Rotberger saw the Holocaust as a punishment for the Jews' sins. Rabbi Szymon Huberband's treatise "Kiddush Hashem" enlarges the meaning of the idea of "Kiddush Hashem" (traditionally applied to voluntary martyrdom) to include the passive victims of the Holocaust. The collection of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira's 85 sermons, "Esh Kodesh", is a purely religious discourse, without any reference to the Nazis. It is a sort of testament of fidelity to Torah and tradition in the face of "the enemy's" efforts to destroy both. Umphasizes that the religious writings in the ghetto were an attempt to give a spiritual dimension to the tragic events that were happening. These writings are part of the Jewish national-religious liturgies of destruction and suffering which have developed over the centuries.
