Abstract:
Examines four types of Jew-hatred: religious anti-Judaism and racist antisemitism (neither of them widespread in Germany today), "secondary" antisemitism (e.g. resentment for being made to feel guilt for the Holocaust), and anti-Zionism. Discusses the question when legitimate criticism of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians becomes illegitimate antisemitism: when it is one-sided, ignoring Israel's need for security; when it involves stereotypes, such as alleged Jewish vengefulness or the arrogance of "the Chosen People"; and when it is generalized to all Jews worldwide. Comments that antisemitism is seldom an end in itself but usually serves a political purpose; it is not an isolated phenomenon but a symptom of the state of the society.
