Schlagwort(e): Maimonides, Moses, Criticism and interpretation
Kurzfassung: Lauded in both the synagogue and the academy, Moses Maimonides remains the most influential philosopher to have emerged out of the Jewish tradition. Yet his radical conception of God’s unity and incorporeality informs a thoroughgoing rationalist reinterpretation of the language of Scripture that might be thought to denude God of his personal qualities. Framed around the first 5 of Maimonides' 13 principles of faith, we examine in this chapter Maimonides' views on God's unity and incorporeality, and the theory of divine attributes at the root of his radical biblical hermeneutic, explaining how, despite some pragmatic concessions to human frailty, Maimonides presents a biblical God who might easily be mistaken (though mistake it may not be) for the more rarefied and abstract God of Aristotle. In conclusion, we discuss, how in the face of such a view, Maimonides can nonetheless maintain a commitment to religious worship.

Kurzfassung: In this paper, I present a range of contemporary Jewish theological approaches to revelation with the aim of highlighting an array of opinions for beginning a discussion of a Jewish theology of revelation. I use models in theology because a “models approach” helps one place the thinkers into conceptual rubrics loosely based on the models of the Catholic theologian Avery Dulles. We discuss seven different models of Jewish Revelation. (1) the historic event model (2) the dialectic model (3) the mystical model (4) the Verbal model (5) the human potential model (6) the negative theology model and the (7) Hermenutical model

Kurzfassung: A basic premise of the Hebrew Bible is that God enters into relationship with humans. The beliefs that God exists independently of us and that we can acquire some knowledge of that fact would appear to make theological realism the most suitable Jewish theological orientation. While theological realism has had a number of proponents among modern and contemporary Jewish thinkers, it is a minority position that has long been overshadowed by other approaches to Jewish theological language. This chapter introduces the wider discussion of theological realism within philosophy of religion and Christian theology, places the work of Jewish proponents of theological realism within both the larger and the Jewish contexts, and then surveys the main alternatives to theological realism among Jewish thinkers including the “theo-realism” of Buber and Heschel, and Wittgensteinian, poetic, fictionalist, and apophatic approaches to Jewish theology. The chapter concludes by pointing to new resources in the theory of reference that can help bolster the case for Jewish theological realism.

Kurzfassung: Rabbinic theology, in the various Midrashim, reveals an intense attentiveness to God as a divine relational subject in the figures of king, a father, a husband, sometime a mother, and a judge. If God is, indeed, a relational subject capable of intentionality and responsiveness seeking a partner, the perfections attributed to him by the philosophers are actually flaws and imperfections from the perspective of Rabbinic theology.

Schlagwort(e): God (Judaism) History of doctrines ; God (Judaism) Philosophy ; Cabala ; Mysticism Judaism
Kurzfassung: In this essay I survey the development of the Kabbalistic Godhead; exploring sources from the Hebrew Bible, through rabbinic literature and medieval Jewish philosophy, and culminating in thirteen century kabbalah and the Zohar. Following this discussion, I discuss primary theological elements incorporated within this conception, such as the understanding of the ten sefirot, which comprise the Godhead, the mystical understanding of the Tetragrammaton as correlating to the divine essence, God’s identification with the Torah and commandments, and the feminine element of the Godhead. This examination of the configuration of the Godhead and its various elements naturally leads to a discussion of the “complex unity” of God. In this examination I discuss the relation of different divine persona within the Godhead, the evil or demonic element of the Godhead, and lastly the differing conceptions of the Godhead as a kataphatic or apophatic entity. Finally, I examine the phenomenon of mystical union between the human being and the Godhead.

Kurzfassung: The central theological questions raised for Jewish belief by the Holocaust concern the existence and nature of God. In this paper, I focus on four figures who addressed these theological questions in a serious way: Richard Rubenstein, Eliezer Berkovits, Irving Greenberg, and Hans Jonas. I show that Jonas’s argument for a limited and changing God is the most radical of these theological responses and that the radical character of his response can best be appreciated by contrasting his approach with the other three theological accounts, especially in terms of how the problem of theodicy functions in those accounts.

Schlagwort(e): Meiri, Menahem ben Shelomo, Criticism and interpretation ; Kook, Abraham Isaac, Philosophy ; Judaism Relations ; Judaism Doctrines ; Idolatry Judaism ; Truth Religious aspects ; Judaism
Kurzfassung: The essay seeks to identify in what way there is particularity to a Jewish theology of religions, as compared with the emergence of the field of theology of religions within a Christian context. Concern of Christian authors is with the problem of salvation and the common typology of exclusivism, inclusivism, pluralism reflects this concern. This typology does not translate well into a Jewish context and we must identify the concerns that lie at the heart of a Jewish theology of religions. The primary concern is that of the legitimacy of the other religion. The issue is negotiated first and foremost through the lens of idolatry (Avoda Zara) as well as through other lenses, such as the question of religious truth. The concerns of a Jewish theology of religions are illustrated through three case studies: Maimonides, R. Menachem Meiri and Rav Kook.

Kurzfassung: This essay deals first with individual prayers of the daily liturgy that excel in distinctive theological affirmations followed by that of the Shema Liturgy as a whole. In discerning the theological patterns of the liturgy and the relationship between the whole and the parts, it focuses on the centrality of Divine kingship and the move from individual to community to humanity especially as expressed in hopes for redemption. It concludes with the peculiarities of a post-temple liturgy.

Schlagwort(e): Kook, Abraham Isaac, Criticism and interpretation ; Mysticism Judaism ; God (Judaism) ; Zionism and Judaism
Kurzfassung: R. Kook is best-known today for his paradoxical embrace of secular Zionism as a covert harbinger and embodiment of the traditional messianic dream. Despite its considerable influence on the trajectory of modern Israeli politics, the practical conclusions that have (rightly or wrongly) been distilled from this understanding of the nature of contemporary Jewish nationalism are increasingly challenged by a more complicated political reality. Other more radical implications of this blurring of theological boundaries, however, which have their roots in modern offshoots of classical Kabbala and parallel tropes of German idealism, bear notions that are surprisingly relevant to more fluid and humanist notions of religious belief in a post-Kantian age. These bear the potential for revising our understanding of the concept of God and of the grounding of religious dogma at large.
