Kurzfassung:
Chronicles the publishing history of the "Protocols" and the speculations about its mysterious origins. At first it was presented as the protocols of a Jewish-Masonic conspiracy, but in 1917 the original disseminator, Sergei Nilus, "discovered" that these ideas had been presented by Theodor Herzl to the first Zionist Congress. Over the years, antisemites who believed in the authenticity of the "Protocols" advanced other, even more fantastic accounts of their origin and transmission. When it was shown that the text was a plagiarism and a forgery, they found an explanation - that the authors of the original plagiarized models (even when they made no reference to Jews) had had the "Jewish conspiracy" in mind. Nazi leaders believed in the conspiracy theory and made use of it, but not of the "Protocols"; they left it to private propaganda organizations such as the Weltdienst, whose leader, Ulrich Fleischhauer, defended the "Protocols" before the Berne High Court in 1935.
Anmerkung:
A shorter version appeared in "Der Erste Zionistenkongress von 1897" (1997) 336-340, and in its English translation as "The 'Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion' and the Basel Zionist Congress of 1897" in "The First Zionist Congress in 1897" (1997) 336-340.
