Kurzfassung:
After the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, Spanish thinkers developed a sense of Spain's "chosenness" and its mission to spread Christianity in the world. The Spaniards' view of themselves as the chosen people, and the many, repeated parallels with the heroic history of the biblical Hebrews found in the political literature of the time, were enough to rouse the wrath of the Spanish against their Jewish “competitors” whom they condemned with fervid zealotry - both the Jews as a people and the Crypto-Jews. Elaborates on the purpose and function of the insistence on "blood purity" in Spanish society of the time. However, those seeking social reforms were influenced by thinkers who came out sharply against the radical nationalistic and religious particularism which had gripped Spanish society. But the tolerant-rational approach remained the heritage of the few.
