Abstract:
Ellis Veryard was an English physician who lived in Plymtree, Devon. He set out on his travels in 1682, through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Levant. A book on his travels was published in London in 1701, and it contains his assessment of the people he met and what he considered to be their national characteristics. The account includes negative comments on Judaism and the Jews whom he encountered in France and in Italy, which reflect the negative stereotypes of that time.
