Abstract:
Surveys treatment of the popular theme of the Wandering Jew in 19th-century German literature. While some works deal sympathetically with the Jew as the eternal scorned and persecuted outsider, others show him as the age-old usurer turned into the modern all-powerful banker, entrepreneur, or journalist; as one who has outlived many cultures and only knows how to turn their remnants into merchandise; as one who consorts with Satan and with other unholy figures such as the Flying Dutchman, and whose efforts to evade his fate end in insanity.
