Abstract:
Analyzing stereotypical images of the Jew in Orwell's writings before and after World War II, concludes that he retained the antisemitic prejudices of the English society in which he grew up. Orwell's views were altered somewhat by the Holocaust, which sensitized him to the murderous danger of prejudice and racism. For example, in an article in 1945, he noted that English antisemitism "does not at present lead to open persecution but it has the effect of making people callous to the sufferings of Jews in other countries." Nevertheless, Orwell continued to overgeneralize about "the Jew, " whom he still viewed as an alien. Orwell was suspicious of "-isms, " and he spoke against antisemitism and communism, but also against Zionism.
