Abstract:
Area D-West is the new explorations in and around Kempinski and Niemeier’s Area D. The excavations focused on both horizontal expansion searching for the boundaries of this building and its interface with the city proper and vertical exploration exploring the intricacies of the internal development of the palace. The excavation uncovered the possible north boundary of the main building, as well as the “Orthostat Building,” which has unique architecture and association with feasting within the monumental complex, to the west and remnants of pre-palace buildings to the north. The palace continues to the east and likely west with no break. Excavation within the palace resulted in further chronostratigraphic phasing beyond the last period of palatial occupation exposed by Kempinski, providing a better understanding of the pre-palatial occupation as well as the full sequence of palatial construction. Additional painted plaster fragments, similar to those originally identified by Kempinski, were found in secondary use within the palace core. Removal of other sections of the latest incarnation of the palace exposed a corridor belonging to the first phase of monumental construction at this area, filled with a rich pottery deposit whose analysis helped establish the ceramic chronology for the Middle Bronze Age occupation of the site.
